Job summary

Oura invites applications for a Staff Materials Engineer to lead development and advancement of material technologies core to the product experience. You will drive innovation across metal surface treatments, PVD/CVD, platings, and novel inorganic coatings to ensure performance and premium user experience across hardware platforms.

The role involves defining roadmaps, guiding R&D, coordinating with PD/ID/Ops, and ensuring reliability and scalability from prototype to production.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree required in a materials-related field.
10+ years of experience in materials engineering for PVD/CVD and metal surface treatments.
Experience developing materials and processes for consumer electronics, medical devices, or wearables.
Strong background in materials characterization, surface chemistry, and process development.

Responsibilities

Manage roadmap for materials engineering across metal surface treatments, PVD/CVD, platings, and emerging technologies.
Drive R&D and materials selection for current and next-gen products, balancing form factor, performance, biocompatibility, manufacturability, and sustainability.
Establish and optimize material and bonding processes for high-volume manufacturing.
Partner with PD, ID, and Ops teams to understand needs and integrate materials solutions early in product development lifecycle.
Define standardized materials testing and coupons to characterize new and existing materials.
Work with external vendors and strategic partners to evaluate new materials and coatings, qualify processes, and ensure scalability.
Define and oversee materials validation, characterization, and reliability testing methodologies.
Collaborate with Reliability and Regulatory teams to ensure material compliance and performance in real-world use conditions.
Identify and mitigate material risks across the product lifecycle, from prototype to production and field usage.
