Feeling energized to make a meaningful impact on the world? Then keep reading - you’ve come to the right place.

Role Description

Form Energy is hiring a Staff Materials Engineer to join our world‑class Anode Design and Performance Team, which brings together experts in materials, battery, test, and process engineering to understand, design, and validate Form Energy’s iron negative electrode (anode). This role reports into our Manager of Anode Design and Performance. Sitting at the intersection of materials and battery engineering, you will create specifications for iron electrode materials and processes grounded in property‑to‑performance linkages, and you will design, execute, and interpret the electrochemical tests that prove those materials out in lab‑ and large‑scale vehicles and field‑deployed batteries. You will work in close partnership with our Supply Chain, R&D, Anode Manufacturing, Cell Engineering, and Test Execution teams. This is an exciting opportunity to help shape and be part of the growth of a fast‑moving company with breakthrough technology and an incredible mission!

Relocation assistance is available.

What you’ll do:
  • Prioritize safety as you carry out the entire electrochemical testing and battery operation process, from the design phase through implementation and finally to post‑test investigation.

  • Create materials specifications for components of Form Energy's iron electrode — backed by property‑to‑performance linkages and a mechanistic understanding of the electrochemistry — and define inspection methods to ensure product quality.

  • Design, execute, and interpret anode electrochemical tests in lab‑ and large‑scale test vehicles and field‑deployed batteries, and identify and close gaps between R&D‑scale and product‑scale performance.

  • Own, perform, and thoroughly document Root Cause Analyses and FMEAs on electrode materials and electrochemical devices to identify opportunities for improvement and drive corrective actions.

  • Characterize electrode materials pre‑ and post‑test in collaboration with our internal material experts and external vendors, developing new characterization techniques where needed.

  • Lead cross‑functional project teams to develop new anode materials and processes, and mentor, guide, and support team members with your expertise and practical experience.

  • Relocation assistance is available.
What you’ll bring:
  • 7+ years of experience spanning materials engineering and electrochemical/battery systems — for example, functional or metallurgical materials development together with hands‑on testing and evaluation of electrochemical devices (aqueous and/or iron‑based systems a plus).

  • Demonstrated ability to build property‑to‑performance relationships for functional or battery materials through experimental design and statistical analysis.

  • Hands‑on practical experience with both materials processing (e.g., powder materials processing or powder metallurgy) and electrochemical device testing and data interpretation, particularly in deployed or market‑ready products.

  • Expertise with failure prediction and investigation methods such as Root Cause Analysis and FMEA, and with statistical experimental design and software such as JMP or Minitab.

  • Excellent communication and organizational skills, with the ability to communicate at all levels of the organization and collaborate across teams in multiple locations; able to travel up to 25% to other Form Energy sites and suppliers.

  • Bachelor's degree in Materials Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Metallurgy, or a related field; PhD preferred.
