Job summary

Upstate Veterinary Specialties in Albany, NY is seeking an experienced leader to join our Emergency Management Team. You will provide leadership, guidance, and support to Emergency Department medical support staff while fostering teamwork, accountability, and professional growth.

You will optimize workflow, implement operational initiatives, and ensure the highest standards of patient care and client service.

Qualifications

  • 2+ years of leadership or supervisory experience.
  • Veterinary medicine experience required.
  • Demonstrated clinical knowledge and strong technical veterinary skills.
  • Bachelor's degree in Veterinary Technology Management, Management, or a related field preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership, oversight, and support to Emergency Department technicians and staff.
  • Partner with ED leadership to ensure consistency in workflow and operations.
  • Facilitate daily floor operations, staffing adjustments, and workflow management.
  • Coach, mentor, and develop shift leads and medical support staff to promote growth and accountability.
  • Ensure compliance with hospital protocols, documentation standards, and QA initiatives.
  • Monitor staffing levels and schedules to ensure coverage and patient flow.
  • Collaborate with veterinarians and hospital leadership to promote communication and teamwork.
  • Participate in recruiting, onboarding, and training of medical support staff.

Job description

We’re seeking an experienced, collaborative, and clinically knowledgeable leader to join our Emergency Management Team. In this role, you will provide leadership, guidance, and support to Emergency Department medical support staff while fostering a culture of teamwork, accountability, and professional growth. You will play a key role in optimizing workflow, developing team members, implementing operational initiatives, and ensuring the highest standards of patient care and client service. Working closely with fellow Emergency Medical Staff Managers, hospital leadership, and clinical teams, you will help drive departmental success and support the continued growth of our emergency services program.

What You'll Do
  • Provide leadership, oversight, and support to Emergency Department technicians, assistants, liaisons, and veterinary cleaning associates
  • Partner with Emergency Department leadership and fellow Medical Staff Managers to ensure consistency in workflow, communication, and departmental operations
  • Facilitate daily floor operations, staffing adjustments, and workflow management to support patient care needs
  • Coach, mentor, and develop shift leads, key technicians, and medical support staff to promote professional growth and accountability
  • Ensure compliance with hospital protocols, SOPs, medical record documentation standards, and quality assurance initiatives
  • Monitor staffing levels and schedules to ensure appropriate coverage and efficient patient flow
  • Support implementation of new protocols, initiatives, and process improvements throughout the department
  • Collaborate with veterinarians, technicians, client service teams, and hospital leadership to promote communication and teamwork
  • Address staff concerns, provide performance coaching, and document employee development conversations as appropriate
  • Participate in recruiting, interviewing, hiring, onboarding, and training of medical support staff
  • Assist in resolving client concerns and partner with hospital leaders to deliver exceptional client experiences
  • Serve as a clinical resource and problem-solving partner for patient care challenges
  • Analyze team performance, patient care trends, and departmental needs to identify opportunities for improvement
  • Support ongoing staff education, competency development, and continuing education initiatives
  • Attend leadership meetings and contribute to strategic planning, operational improvements, and departmental growth initiatives
  • Promote a positive, collaborative, and professional culture aligned with UVS core values
What We're Looking For
  • 2+ years of leadership or supervisory experience required
  • Veterinary medicine experience required
  • Demonstrated clinical knowledge and strong technical veterinary skills
  • Bachelor's degree in Veterinary Technology Management, Management, or a related field preferred
  • Experience leading teams in an emergency or specialty veterinary environment strongly preferred
  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office applications, including Excel and Word
  • Experience working with electronic medical record systems preferredExceptional communication, coaching, and conflict resolution skills
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor, develop, and motivate team members
  • Ability to implement change while maintaining team engagement and operational efficiency

Schedule
  • Full-time, exempt position
  • Schedule may be adjusted based on departmental and hospital operational needs
  • Flexibility to support business needs, staffing requirements, and departmental initiatives as necessary
  • Availability to support staff and operational needs outside of regularly scheduled hours when needed
Compensation
  • $70,000–$90,000 annually, commensurate with experience
