We are seeking a new team member for our Southborough, MA office. As a valuable member of the team, you will support our growing group of scientists and partner directly with a Massachusetts Licensed Site Professional to conduct site assessments and remediation projects across the State.

In this position, you will be trained to actively support projects prior to, during and after construction. Office work may include assisting with data interpretation and tabulations, scientific report writing and plans. Field work may include site assessments, construction oversight, drilling oversight, environmental sampling, and compliance monitoring.

This position is an hourly, full-time position and can be hired at the following levels:

  • Assistant Staff Environmental Scientist – Typically with at least 1 year of relevant experience and expertise.
  • Staff Environmental Scientist – Typically with at least 2 years of relevant experience and expertise.

The position is tied to our Massachusetts office. However, candidates based locally in Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Indiana, and Illinois will be highly considered.

What you will accomplish

  • Assist with ASTM Phase I Environmental Site Assessments and online research.
  • Assist in field responsibilities, which include site property assessments and local research.
  • Perform basic field work, which may include soil or groundwater sampling and may include travelling and/or overnights.
  • Assist with field work including contractor oversight/inspection, and data collection.
  • Perform assignments under the direct supervision of a Licensed Site Professional, Environmental Professional, or Project Manager
  • Ability to interpret and record data, conduct analyses, compare findings to relevant studies and local, state, and federal regulations to ensure compliance.
  • Assist with preparation of SWPPPs and field inspections to ensure compliance.
  • Assist with research and preparation of environmental health and safety plans.
  • Assist with proposals, budgets, and project planning
  • Adhere to the safety program and look out for the safety of others, promptly communicating and mitigating safety hazards.
  • Supervise a small crew while conducting environmental fieldwork. This includes:
    • Independently assigning and directing the activities of others on behalf of SWCA, often in remote areas without immediate guidance from senior managers, to ensure quality and on-time delivery
    • Ensuring that employees understand their responsibilities and delegated tasks and being held accountable if crew members under your supervision are not performing their activities correctly, productively, and safely
    • Serving as a conduit of communication between employees and senior managers, including communicating issues to relevant senior managers
    • Receiving and resolving complaints from employees in the field
    • Monitoring team productivity and offering timely performance guidance, including determining when correction action is needed and delivering appropriate feedback

Experience and qualifications for success

Required:

  • One (1) year of relevant experience in the private or public sector (may include research experience)
  • A bachelor's degree in an environmental related field.
  • Experience completing fieldwork, data analysis, technical reports, and data management
  • Able to travel to site and conduct fieldwork for long hours in inclement weather, rugged terrain, and high heat and carry up to 40 pounds
  • Proficient in MS Office products and technical writing.
  • Valid driver’s license, good driving record and your own transportation.

Preferred:

  • Two (2) years of relevant experience in the private or public sector (may include research experience).
  • Completed OSHA 40-hour HAZWOPER training.
  • Basic understanding and/or course work related to the following: geology, hydrogeology, environmental science, geochemistry, contaminant fate & transport, site investigation, soil/groundwater remediation technologies, or solid waste.
  • Experience with ASTM Phase I Environmental Site Assessments.
  • Experience with soil or groundwater sampling.
  • Experience with construction oversight and/or compliance monitoring.
  • Experience with the Massachusetts Contingency Plan and related remediation work.

An employee in this Massachusettes-based position can expect the following pay rates: Assistant Staff Environmental Scientist: $23.99/hour to $31.01/hour; Staff Environmental Scientist: $26.91/hour -$31.50/hour.. Actual pay within this range may depend on experience, qualifications, geographic location, client requirements where applicable, and other factors permitted by law. Regular-status employees are also eligible for performance bonuses.
