Job summary

Burns & McDonnell in Chicago, IL, is seeking a Staff Instrument & Controls Engineer to join its Mission Critical team on data center projects.

You will develop and review Building Automation design packages for HVAC control systems, coordinate with mechanical and electrical teams, and create control drawings. The role requires ABET-accredited degree, 3+ years experience, SPI proficiency, and travel willingness. ESOP and strong benefits are offered.

Qualifications

• Bachelor Degree in Electrical, Mechanical or Chemical Engineering or related ABET-accredited program with 3 years of applicable engineering experience.
• Master Degree in above Engineering programs or related and 2 years of applicable engineering experience preferred.
• Strong knowledge in standard engineering techniques and procedures.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Proficient in SPI instrumentation for instrument datasheets.
• Strong computer skills (e.g. Microsoft Office Suite).
• Strong attention to detail, facilitation, team building, collaboration, organization and problem-solving skills.
• Must have or be able to obtain a Transportation Worker Identification Card (TWIC).
• Engineers in Training(EIT) Certification Preferred.

Responsibilities

• Develop and review Building Automation design packages for HVAC control systems and EPMS.
• Coordinate with mechanical and electrical design teams to develop Sequences of Operations and Point Lists.
• Create engineering drawings for control panels and field wiring designs including installation details, BOM, and P&IDs.
• Manage quality reviews of project submittals.
• Evaluate technical bids and manage vendor/subconsultant contracts.
• Review and approve vendor and subconsultant drawings including Sequences of Operation and BOMs.
• Participate in Software Bench Tests and Factory Tests.
• Provide technical assistance during commissioning at project sites.
• Ensure compliance with safety policies.
• Facilitate multi-consultant and Owner meetings for design changes.
• Lead production of engineering drawings using Revit, AutoCAD Electrical, or ePlan.
• Support RFI responses and work plans.
• Adhere to client and industry standards in designs.

The Staff Instrument & Controls Engineer will participate on both multi-disciplinary and controls-specific engineering teams to develop and review Building Automation Engineering design packages, perform calculations and develop engineering solutions in support of capital and retrofit projects in a variety of locations. Work duties can consist of any of the following depending on client, project, and consultant role:

• Assists in development of design drawings and specifications for design of primarily HVAC control systems and EPMS, for both PLC-based systems and DDC-based systems (System is client-specific).




• Coordinate with mechanical and electrical design teams to develop Sequences of Operations and Point Lists for HVAC control and electrical monitoring of equipment and systems.




• Create engineering drawings for control panel and field wiring designs including installation details, bill of material, and P&IDs




• Manage quality reviews of project submittals.




• Evaluate technical bids and managing vendor and subconsultant contracts.




• Review and approving of vendor and subconsultant drawings, including Sequences of Operation, Points Lists, Engineering Drawings, Bill of Materials, Graphics, and Test Scripts.




• Participate in Software Bench Tests, Software Factory Acceptance Tests, and Equipment Factory Witness Tests.




• Provide technical assistance during commissioning at project site.




• Ensure compliance with company and site safety policies.




• Facilitate multi-consultant and Owner meetings for design changes and implementation.




• Lead production of engineering drawings using Autodesk Revit, AutoCAD Electrical, or ePlan.




• Supports RFI responses and associated work plans.




• Ensures adherence to client and industry standards and applies client or industry standards, guidelines, specifications, practices and procedures in preparing designs.




• All other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• Bachelor Degree in Electrical, Mechanical or Chemical Engineering or related degree from an ABET accredited program. and 3 years of applicable engineering experience required, consulting preferred.




• Master Degree in above Engineering programs or related and 2 years of applicable engineering experience required, consulting preferred.




• Strong knowledge in standard engineering techniques and procedures.




• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.




• Ability to work methodically and analytically in a quantitative problem-solving environment and demonstrated critical thinking skills.




• Proficient in standard engineering techniques and procedures.




• Proficient in Smart Plant instrumentation (SPI) in the development of instrument datasheets.




• Strong computer skills (e.g. Microsoft Office Suite).

Compensation

$120,000.00-170,000.00 Yearly

The expected compensation range for this position is displayed in compliance with all local/state regulations. The expected compensation range for this position is based on a number of factors, including but not limited to: individual education, qualifications, prior work experience and work location. The total annual compensation package will consist of a base salary and eligibility to participate in our discretionary year-end incentive bonus program.
