Job description

The Role

At General Motors, the IP Displays, VIP HVAC Faceplate (HFP) and Rear Seat Infotainment (RSI) Displays are among the most visible customer interfaces in the vehicle. This Technical Specialist role serves as a technical authority across display integration strategy, requirements, specifications, DCTAs, supplier execution, and issue resolution, working across hardware, software, validation, design, purchasing, quality, manufacturing, and program teams to deliver robust, high-quality customer experiences.

This role requires a strong technical leader who can influence decisions across organizations, establish integration strategies, and solve highly complex technical issues spanning multiple display systems, platforms, and vehicle programs.

What You’ll Do
  • Define and shepherd the strategy for some IP Displays, VIP HFPs and RSI Display integration across multiple vehicle programs, ensuring alignment on architecture, interfaces, requirements, and execution priorities.
  • Own and maintain system and component requirements, technical specifications, and DCTAs, ensuring clear traceability from customer and program needs through validation and issue closure.
  • Provide expert technical leadership for complex integration topics involving displays, HMI interfaces, electrical architecture, data communications, mechanical packaging, and cross-functional subsystem interactions.
  • Lead resolution of highly complex technical and program issues through structured problem solving, root cause analysis, corrective action, and timely escalation across internal teams and suppliers.
  • Serve as the primary technical interface for suppliers and partner teams, especially during sourcing activities, defining deliverables, reviewing execution quality, and ensuring timing, performance, and robustness expectations are met, especially in tech reviews and design peer reviews.
  • Support development through key program milestones. Lead design peer reviews, serve as validation engineer, participate in build events (where needed), launch readiness, and closure of open issues to required timing.
  • Influence standards, best practices, and common methods across the Displays organization, embedding lessons learned and improving how requirements, integration deliverables, and validation activities are executed.
  • Stay abreast of competition and industry trends to identify opportunities that improve speed‑to‑market and cost efficiency.
  • Mentor DREs and other engineers, provide technical coaching, and represent Displays in cross‑functional forums, leadership reviews, and strategic discussions.
Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and align display integration strategies for some IP Displays, HFP and RSI across multiple programs and architectures.
  • Create, review, and update Statements of Requirements, technical specifications, interface definitions, DCTAs, and related engineering documentation.
  • Translate system‑level needs into actionable requirements for suppliers, validation teams, software teams, and hardware teams.
  • Drive pre‑sourcing activities to achieve alignment across Studio, UX, interior, HVAC, electrical, materials, systems, validation, purchasing, quality, manufacturing, and program teams to achieve the optimum technical and commercial solution and to support the DRE in this task during development when disconnects arise.
  • Support resolution of integration and launch issues related to performance, fit, finish, interfaces, diagnostics, communication, validation failures, and manufacturing execution.
  • Perform read‑across activities for issues (and their solutions) identified as part of the development process.
  • Assess technical risks, recommend design or process changes, and advise leadership on tradeoffs, priorities, and recovery plans.
  • Support validation strategy, test readiness, and closure plans to ensure requirements are met with quality and on‑time execution.
  • Build organizational capability by standardizing work products, improving processes, and coaching engineers across the domain.
  • Communicate complex technical content clearly and persuasively in both technical and leadership forums, using high‑quality data and analysis to enable sound, timely decision making.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering or a related technical field.
  • Significant engineering experience in automotive displays, infotainment, electronics integration, HMI systems, or closely related technologies, including experience leading complex cross‑functional workstreams.
  • Demonstrated expertise in requirements definition, technical specifications, systems integration, validation, and structured problem resolution.
  • Experience working with suppliers and internal partners to define deliverables, manage execution, and resolve issues.
  • Knowledge of vehicle electrical and communication systems such as CAN, LIN, LVDS, and Ethernet.
  • Strong understanding of automotive product development processes, including DFMEA, DFSS, requirements engineering, and verification and validation.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master of Science degree in Engineering or a related technical field.
  • Experience with HVAC controls, instrument clusters, center stack displays, passenger displays, or other highly integrated cockpit electronics.
  • Experience supporting development builds, launch activities, and manufacturing issue resolution.
  • Experience managing multiple suppliers, programs, or technical workstreams simultaneously.
  • Experience influencing standards, methods, or technical roadmaps across an engineering organization.
Level Expectations

At this level, the engineer is expected to operate with a high degree of technical independence and ownership, serving as a subject matter expert for complex display integration challenges. The role requires applying advanced engineering judgment to develop innovative solutions, influence technical direction, and drive execution across cross‑functional teams.

The successful candidate will be responsible for identifying and resolving highly complex technical issues, making recommendations that impact product architecture and program outcomes, and providing guidance to peers and partner organizations. While this is an individual contributor role, the position requires strong technical leadership through influence, collaboration, and mentorship, helping teams make informed decisions and achieve program objectives while balancing quality, cost, timing, and customer experience.
