Job summary

Betterment is seeking a Staff Full Stack Engineer to build customer-facing web applications and scale our platform in NYC. You’ll shape systems, optimize developer experience, and partner with product and design to deliver delightful experiences for clients and advisors.

You’ll lead by example, mentor engineers, and advance engineering practices with a focus on performance, observability, and reliability, while exploring AI-assisted development and new technologies to improve the customer

Qualifications

• Proven experience leading complex technical projects from discovery through release.
• Hands-on experience using AI coding tools in production work.
• Strong full stack engineering experience with customer-facing web apps and the systems that support them.
• Proficiency in at least one server-side language (Ruby on Rails preferred; Java/Python/C# valuable).
• Frontend proficiency with React or similar frameworks; GraphQL a plus.
• Strong relational database skills and SQL writing capability.
• Ability to mentor engineers and influence technical direction.
• Commitment to high-quality software, testing, observability, and reliability.

Responsibilities

• Shape the technical direction for large projects and define systems, patterns, and engineering practices.
• Lead AI-assisted development initiatives, including review and testing of AI-generated code.
• Collaborate with engineers, product managers, designers, and stakeholders to translate goals into pragmatic technical plans.
• Design and build high-quality software across the stack with performance and reliability in mind.
• Guide complex projects from discovery through release, aligning teams and making tradeoffs.
• Improve developer workflows and architecture health through thoughtful investments.
• Mentor engineers through feedback, pairing, design reviews, and daily leadership.
• Evaluate new patterns/technologies and adopt when they improve customer or developer experience.
