Job summary

Gusto is seeking a Staff Full Stack Software Engineer to drive architecture across our core platforms (Payroll, Benefits, HR). You will own multi-quarter initiatives, refactor and scale a large Ruby on Rails and JavaScript/React monolith, and mentor engineers while leveraging AI to accelerate delivery.

You’ll collaborate with Product, Data Science, and Design to prototype and ship high-impact features daily, ensuring reliability and performance for hundreds of thousands of users.

Qualifications

• 10+ years of professional software engineering experience.
• Experience building and operating high-throughput web applications using modern backend and frontend tech.
• Proven refactor leadership and scalability improvements across complex domains.
• Experience applying AI tooling to streamline development and testing.
• Ownership of multi-quarter engineering roadmaps delivering customer value.
• Strong mentorship and engineering leadership across teams.

Responsibilities

• Design, build, test, and maintain features across Gusto's core product suite.
• Scale and refactor a large Ruby on Rails/JS/React codebase for high availability.
• Leverage AI tools to accelerate feature development and test coverage.
• Own ambiguous technical initiatives from concept to rollout and monitoring.
• Collaborate with Product, Data Science, Design, and Platform Eng.
• Mentor engineers to raise quality and technical standards.
