Staff Field Quality Engineer - Powertrain

Phoenix, AZ

About Lucid

At Lucid, we are creating exceptional mobility experiences through innovation to drive the world forward. Built on Lucid’s proprietary technology and software-defined vehicle architecture, our award-winning vehicles bring our “Compromise Nothing™” approach to the global automotive market. That means refusing to choose between performance and sustainability, design and engineering, ambition and integrity. In Lucid Air and Lucid Gravity, we have designed and built vehicles that have redefined their segments, combining exceptional range, performance, design, and expansive space in a single experience.

We achieve this through deep vertical integration, with design, engineering, and production happening in-house across our global offices and manufacturing facilities. Our teams come from industries around the world, united by a shared commitment to excellence. By refusing to settle, you can help redefine what’s possible and shape the future of mobility.

About the Team

Lucid’s Field Quality team connects real-world customer and service data to engineering, manufacturing, supplier quality, and future product decisions. The Powertrain group focuses on electric drive units, traction motors, inverters, high-voltage interfaces, and supporting thermal and lubrication systems that shape vehicle performance, efficiency, refinement, and reliability. This team is unique in how it combines fleet analytics, vehicle diagnostics, component analysis, and cross-functional technical reviews to identify emerging issues and prevent recurrence across Lucid’s vehicle portfolio.

About the Role

The Staff Field Quality Engineer, Powertrain is a senior individual contributor role reporting to a Field Quality or Quality Engineering leader. This role exists to provide technical leadership for complex, high-impact customer and fleet concerns involving Lucid’s electric powertrain systems. In the first 12 months, this person will own critical investigations from issue definition through validated corrective action, improve investigation standards, and help reduce recurrence across the customer fleet. Success will be measured by evidence-based root cause closure, effective corrective actions, improved fleet performance, and stronger feedback loops into engineering, manufacturing, suppliers, diagnostics, and service. A strong candidate will have the opportunity to influence how Lucid detects, investigates, and prevents powertrain issues across current and future vehicle programs, with direct visibility to decisions that shape product quality and customer experience.

What You Own
  • Powertrain Investigations: Lead complex field quality investigations involving electric drive units, traction motors, inverters, gearboxes, high-voltage interfaces, embedded controls, lubrication systems, cooling interfaces, and related vehicle systems, ensuring validated root causes and clear technical conclusions.
  • Root Cause Governance: Set the technical standard for evidence-based root cause analysis and determine when investigation conclusions, test results, or corrective action plans are complete enough to support closure.
  • Corrective Action Strategy: Define and drive permanent corrective and preventive actions across design, software, calibration, manufacturing, supplier quality, diagnostics, and service, ensuring interim containment does not replace long-term resolution.
  • Fleet Risk Prioritization: Use warranty claims, diagnostic data, telematics, vehicle logs, service repairs, parts returns, and customer feedback to identify emerging issues, quantify fleet exposure, and determine escalation priorities.
  • Validation Planning: Establish validation plans, acceptance criteria, test conditions, sample requirements, and monitoring periods that confirm corrective actions are effective and reduce recurrence.
  • Cross-Functional Alignment: Lead technical reviews with engineering, manufacturing, supplier quality, service, diagnostics, software, controls, calibration, and leadership teams to align decisions and remove barriers to resolution.
  • Field Learning Integration: Convert field findings into improved engineering requirements, design standards, DFMEAs, DVP&R plans, manufacturing controls, diagnostic strategies, service procedures, and future program inputs.
What You Bring
  • 8 years of experience in battery‑electric vehicle powertrain engineering, field quality, product quality, reliability, validation engineering, manufacturing engineering, supplier quality, or a related technical discipline.
  • BS degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, Systems Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • Experience investigating and resolving customer-facing EV powertrain concerns using objective evidence, vehicle data, component analysis, and structured problem-solving methods.
  • Experience leading cross-functional technical investigations and driving corrective actions through validated implementation.
  • Ability to read, write, speak, and understand English sufficiently to perform the essential duties of the position, including understanding work instructions, safety procedures, and job-related communications.
Preferred
  • MS or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, Systems Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
  • Experience with premium, high-performance, or high-volume battery‑electric vehicles.
  • Experience in EV powertrain domains such as traction motors, power electronics, electric drive units, embedded controls, high-voltage distribution, thermal management, lubrication, or vehicle diagnostics.
  • Experience with CAN, UDS, diagnostic trouble code analysis, data logging, signal evaluation, diagnostic development, or vehicle communication protocols.
  • Working knowledge of APQP, PPAP, DFMEA, PFMEA, SPC, control plans, change management, automotive launch processes, ISO 26262, Automotive SPICE, or high-voltage safety requirements.
Physical Requirements
  • Standing and Walking: Ability to stand and walk as needed in office, service, lab, or manufacturing environments.
  • Manual Dexterity: Ability to use hands for computer work, tools, inspection activities, component handling, and test or diagnostic equipment.
  • Lifting and Carrying: Ability to lift, carry, push, or pull items weighing up to 25 lbs. as needed, with assistance available for heavier items.
  • Reaching and Bending: Ability to reach, bend, or access vehicle and component areas during inspections, testing, or issue investigations.
  • PPE Expectations: Must wear required PPE, including safety shoes, gloves, protective sleeves, eye protection, hearing protection, or other equipment as required by company safety standards.
Work Requirement

This role is fully onsite at our Arizona Manufacturing Facilities and Offices in Phoenix, AZ. Daily in-person presence is required.
