Job description

General Description

Are you interested in working in a dynamic environment building the power generation and transmission infrastructure required to meet present and future needs in North America? Quanta Infrastructure Solutions Group (QISG) is a rapidly growing construction management and geo-structural engineering company within the Quanta Services (Quanta) family of companies. Quanta, the largest civil construction work force in North America focused on the Power Generation and Transmission Sector, is meeting the nation’s energy, utility, and communication needs head on. QISG is seeking a Staff Engineering Geologist interested in working to support large-scale engineering and construction projects throughout North America by providing geo-structural design solutions to our construction partners and clients.

About this Role

A Staff Engineering Geologist within QISG is involved in a variety of geotechnical engineering projects with a focus on data collection and geologic risk interpretation in support of various geo-structural design needs and an emphasis on large-scale energy generation and transmission-related projects. Collaborating with an in-house, multi-disciplinary engineering and construction team — including civil, structural, geotechnical, construction management, and construction experts — a Staff Engineering Geologist within QISG plays a crucial role in providing geo-structural design solutions on large scale projects.

This role is an office-based position with a primary focus on executing both pre-construction geotechnical investigations, geologic hazard assessments, and construction-phase monitoring services. A successful candidate is able to utilize geologic judgement, field observations, and digital technologies such as LiDAR and GIS to assess and quantify geologic conditions. Periodic fieldwork is also expected. These duties may include activities such as geological characterization of materials in the field, quality control and assurance of construction projects. The Staff Engineering Geologist will perform under the direct oversight of a Professional Engineering Geologist and/or Geotechnical Engineer, to solve complex problems. A successful candidate is able to utilize sound geotechnical and geologic judgement, field data collected by themselves or others, and digital technologies to develop economical solutions to support civil construction and communicate effectively with project management, technical, and construction personnel.

Key Responsibilities

  • Geo-hazard risk analyses on long, linear corridor-type projects; geologic surface mapping, rock/soil subsurface exploration programs, and geological risk analysis associated with foundation design and construction.
  • Collect, analyze, and interpret data in support of geotechnical studies, foundation engineering designs, and site investigations as required by a project.
  • Perform desktop-based geologic research, organizing, data analyses, interpreting and concisely presenting research data collected from a variety of public and private sources.
  • Manage and operate geotechnical and geophysical instruments, track test results, process and interpret data, and troubleshoot when issues arise.
  • Interface closely with project-level and senior leadership personnel within the company, including geotechnical, geological, structural, transmission line, and civil engineering, GIS, and construction management team members.
  • Provide information on geologic conditions, hazard assessments and apply geologic engineering principles to solve complex problems.
  • Participate in oversight and management of field subcontractor activities, such as geotechnical drilling and testing and/or forensics studies.
  • Develop written reports and/or provide verbal communication of information in a professional and appropriate manner under the direct supervision of a Senior Engineering Geologist and/or Geotechnical Engineer.
  • Perform occasional site visits to project sites located throughout North America.
  • Participation in sector focused professional organizations, and attendance and presentations at industry events.
  • Work under supervision of Project Engineering Geologist, or Project Manager in a professional office setting.

Required Experience and Education

  • Required - Bachelor’s of Science degree (BS) in Geology, Engineering Geology, Geotechnical Engineering, or related field.
  • Required - Academic qualification for geologic licensure, via completion of the Fundamentals in Geology (FE), or Geologist-in-Training (GIT) certifications with in the goal of obtaining Professional Geologist licensure in one or multiple states.
  • Required - excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Required - proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Teams.
  • Required - ability to work with moderate supervision and maximum efficiency in a small or medium size office setting.
  • Preferred - completion of a 4 to 6 week capstone field camp as part of the academic curriculum.
  • Preferred - Master’s degree or upper division coursework in geotechnical engineering or engineering geology.
  • Preferred – 0 to 4 years experience in the geotechnical, structural, transmission, or construction field.
  • Preferred - familiarity with use and application of systems such as the Unified Soil Classification System (USCS), International Society of Rock Mechanics (ISRM) rock quality scale, and other published geotechnical standards of practice.
  • Preferred - familiarity with the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) for collection and analysis of geological and geotechnical data, including QGIS, and/or ArcGIS software.

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to lift 40 lbs at times.
