Job summary

InterAgency Inc. is seeking Staff Engineers to join our water and wastewater conveyance practice in the Mid-Atlantic region. The role supports design, analysis, and field tasks across DC Water, WSSC, Fairfax, Loudoun, Arlington, and AlexRenew.

We welcome recent graduates and EITs who are process-driven and detail-oriented, with opportunities for growth in design and regulatory coordination. Hybrid presence in the DC metro region is required.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or a closely related discipline.
  • 0-4 years of relevant engineering experience.
  • Coursework or demonstrated working knowledge of fluid mechanics and hydraulics.
  • Familiarity with AutoCAD/Civil 3D, and Microsoft Excel for engineering calculations.
  • Clear written communication and attention to detail in preparing and checking technical work.
  • Willingness to perform field work at active water and wastewater facilities and construction sites.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to travel to project sites throughout the DC metro region.

Responsibilities

  • Support design and analysis tasks for water and wastewater conveyance projects.
  • Prepare calculations and hydraulic models; document inputs and results.
  • Create plans and figures in AutoCAD/Civil 3D and GIS.
  • Compile project data from as-builts, GIS, CCTV, and flow monitoring.
  • Draft technical memoranda, design reports, and specs.
  • Perform field work including site reconnaissance and inspections.
  • Support construction-phase tasks: submittal logging, RFIs, record drawings.
  • Coordinate with partners, client staff, and InterAgency colleagues.
  • Assist in proposals with graphics and project descriptions.
  • Track hours and communicate progress to task lead.

Staff Engineer – Water & Wastewater Conveyance.

Over our 15-year history we have provided facility design, regulatory coordination, NEPA and Clean Water Act permitting, and program management support on multibillion-dollar deep tunnel programs, biosolids facility upgrades, coastal resilience projects, and drinking water access initiatives.

Position Overview:

InterAgency Inc. is seeking Staff Engineers (both recent graduates and EITs) to join our growing water and wastewater conveyance practice. We are looking for highly motivated, process-driven and detail-oriented professionals to support our engineering teams on design, analysis, and field support tasks. Our current projects center on water and wastewater conveyance in the Mid-Atlantic region, with our current client base including DC Water, WSSC, Fairfax, Loudoun, Arlington and AlexRenew.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Support design and analysis tasks for water and wastewater conveyance assignments, including hydraulic capacity evaluation, alternatives analysis, rehabilitation versus replacement strategy, pipeline and force main design, pump and lift station design, diversion and flow control structures, and trenchless and tunnel engineering support. Tasks may include, but are not limited to:
    • Prepare engineering calculations and support hydraulic modeling under the direction of senior staff, documenting inputs, assumptions, and results.
    • Produce and revise plans, details, and figures in AutoCAD/Civil 3D and GIS.
    • Compile, organize, and quality-check project data, such as utility records, as-built drawings, GIS datasets, flow monitoring data, and CCTV and condition assessment records.
    • Draft sections of technical memoranda, design reports, and specifications.
    • Perform field work including site reconnaissance, structure and manhole inspection support, flow monitoring support, and construction observation.
    • Support construction-phase services, including submittal logging and review support, RFI tracking, and record drawing preparation.
  • Coordinate directly with engineering partners, client staff, and InterAgency colleagues on assigned tasks.
  • Support proposal preparation, including graphics, resumes, and project description write-ups.
  • Track your own hours and task status accurately and communicate progress and obstacles to your task lead.
Qualifications:
Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or a closely related discipline.
  • 0-4 years of relevant engineering experience.
  • Coursework or demonstrated working knowledge of fluid mechanics and hydraulics.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Engineer in Training (EIT) certification, or Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) examination passed or scheduled.
  • Master's degree in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or a related field.
  • Coursework or project experience involving water or wastewater engineering.
  • Exposure to GIS, InfoWorks ICM, SewerGEMS, WaterGEMS, or comparable platforms.
  • Interest in pursuing professional licensure and building a career in water infrastructure.
Employment Conditions:
  • Full-time, exempt employment.
  • Work conditions & location: Regular presence at client and home office locations throughout the DC metro region.
Physical Requirements:
  • Must be able to perform essential duties satisfactorily with reasonable accommodation.
  • Work is generally done sitting, talking, hearing, and typing. Visual acuity to use a keyboard, prepare and analyze data and figures; transcribing, viewing a computer terminal; extensive reading.
  • Periodic site visits require the ability to traverse uneven terrain and active construction sites, wear personal protective equipment, and observe confined space and utility site safety protocols.
Compensation & Benefits:
  • Salary range: $70,000 – $100,000, commensurate with experience and qualifications.
