Job summary

Modal is building the next infrastructure layer for AI workloads, delivering fast, durable object storage and distributed capabilities for hundreds of petabytes of data across datacenters. You will design and implement the core storage stack that underpins container images, volumes, and checkpoints, collaborating across teams to reduce latency and improve throughput.

Ideal candidates have 5+ years of experience in distributed storage or caching, strong Linux fundamentals, and cloud storage

Qualifications

• 5+ years of experience writing high-quality production code.
• Experience building high-performance distributed storage or caching systems at a large scale.
• Strong cloud skills with object storage and CDNs, and their consistency, throughput and cost characteristics.
• Strong knowledge of low-level operating system foundations (Linux kernel, file systems, page cache, containers).
• Willingness to participate in on-call rotation and production incident response.

Responsibilities

• Design, build, and maintain the novel, high-performance systems that power the serverless platform.
• Own durability and cost at petabyte scale across replication and garbage collection.
• Work across the stack from local disk to distributed blob storage and garbage collection.
• Shape what storage becomes next as storage moves closer to workloads.
