Andreessen Horowitz, commonly known as a16z, is hiring a Staff Engineer to own enterprise security. The role covers insider risk, data protection, SaaS security, and AI adoption governance across the firm.

You will define strategy, select and implement tooling, and collaborate with IT, Security, Legal, and Compliance to implement robust controls. The role requires in-office presence 2 days a week in San Francisco with occasional days in Menlo Park.

Qualifications

• 7+ years in security engineering or enterprise security roles.
• Expertise across IAM, authentication/authorization, DLP and insider risk tooling, SSPM, and endpoint management.
• Proven track record owning security programs end-to-end (DLP, insider risk, SaaS security).
• Hands-on securing AI tools and data-flow governance (AI tools & agents).
• Experience with Google Workspace, Okta, MDM, SSPM, zero trust, and cloud-native environments.
• Ability to translate technical risk for non-technical stakeholders.
• Collaborative, low-ego team player with cross-functional impact.

Responsibilities

• Own insider risk and data protection program end-to-end, selecting and implementing the next DLP platform.
• Drive secure AI adoption across the firm with governance for agents and data access.
• Own SaaS security posture across vendors: inventory, SSPM, baselines, monitoring.
• Set authentication/authorization policies with IT (Okta, MFA, device trust).
• Manage EDR across macOS, Windows, iOS; coordinate with IT on MDM policies.
• Oversee joiner/mover/leaver lifecycle: access revocation, data holds, exfiltration checks.
• Run vendor security due diligence with fast, risk-based reviews.
• Monitor, investigate, and respond to data exfiltration and insider events.
• Participate in the Security on-call rotation.
