GEICO is seeking a highly skilled Staff Engineer with a passion for building high-performance, low maintenance, zero-downtime platforms and applications, especially those that optimize and resolve performance issues in our commercial insurance tech platforms. You will help drive our insurance business transformation as we transition from a traditional IT model to a tech organization with engineering excellence as its mission, while co-creating a culture of psychological safety and continuous improvement.

Position Description

Our Staff Engineer is a lead member of the engineering staff working across the organization to provide a frictionless experience to our customers and maintain the highest standards of protection and availability. Our team thrives and succeeds in delivering high-quality technology products and services in a hyper-growth environment where priorities shift quickly. The ideal candidate has broad and deep technical knowledge, typically ranging from front-end UIs through back-end systems and all points in between.

Responsibilities
  • Focus on multiple areas and provide leadership to the engineering teams
  • Own complete solutions across their entire lifecycle
  • Influence and build vision with product managers, team members, customers, and other engineering teams to solve complex problems for enterprise-class business applications
  • Ensure quality, usability, and performance of solutions
  • Lead design sessions and code reviews to elevate engineering standards
  • Utilize programming languages like Python, C#, or other object-oriented languages, SQL, NoSQL databases, Docker, Kubernetes, and Azure tools and services
  • Mentor junior team members to help them realize their potential
  • Share best practices and improve processes within and across teams
Qualifications
  • Fluency in C# .NET and at least one additional modern language such as Java, C++, or Python, including object-oriented design
  • Experience with microservices architecture and REST APIs
  • Experience designing architecture, patterns, reliability, and scalability of systems
  • Experience with continuous delivery and infrastructure as code
  • Knowledge of DevOps concepts and cloud architecture
  • Experience with PowerShell scripting, application monitoring, security protocols (Active Directory, SAML, OAuth), data structures, and algorithms
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work in a fast-paced environment
  • Proficiency in documenting workflows and system topology using tools like Microsoft Visio
  • Experience with Azure DevOps and software development lifecycle tools
Experience
  • 6+ years in software development, especially in Duck Creek, C# .NET, CBO, Author, and ManuScript
  • 4+ years working with open-source frameworks
  • 3+ years in architecture and design
  • 3+ years with cloud services such as AWS, GCP, or Azure
Education
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or equivalent experience
