Job summary

Johnson Controls is seeking a Staff Engineer – Chiller SME to lead cross-functional teams across regions, driving continuous improvement for air-cooled screw chiller products used in Data Center and Mission Critical applications.

You will guide technical resolution of complex design and application issues, support field testing, and help generate service content and training materials. Strong leadership, HVAC expertise, and global collaboration are essential.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.
• Graduate degree preferred.
• Ability to lead an execution team and coordinate resources.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
• Willingness to travel up to 15%.

What Will You Do

The Staff Engineer – Chiller SME is proactive in leading and/or participating on multi-functional teams (manufacturing, design, quality, supply chain) with team members located in different regions, globally, to drive continuous improvement of products and processes for air-cooled screw chiller products used in Data Center and Mission Critical applications. As an authority, you will help guide the teams technically to resolve complex product design and application issues based on years of product experience, education and training. The candidate will have extensive knowledge of chiller operations with a focus mechanical and HVAC refrigerant design.

How You Will Do It

• Communicates at the appropriate technical level to resolve issues for Product Technical Support, Field Technicians and customers.
• Participates on product development teams with emphasis on DFMEA’s, SFMEA’s design reviews, reliability test plans, design for manufacturing and helping to coordinate and follow up on field testing.
• Works with the Technical Communications Group, is responsible for the technical content of service literature which includes Installation and Operations Manuals, Service Manuals, Service Information letters, and Service Bulletins for air cooled chiller products. Also, responsible for providing input for the technical content of training materials.
• Communicates with design, manufacturing, and service groups globally sharing lessons learned and best practices to prevent issues from arising on new products being introduced into the marketplace and improve product quality and cost.
• Participates on Warranty Teams to stay abreast of field issues and participate with multi-disciplined teams to find root cause and corrective actions for resolution of these issues. Must be proactive, stepping in to take the lead, coordinating and directing actions, to resolve issues as the situation may require.
• Works with Engineering team to test programs to validate potential methods of reducing human intervention for service and maintenance of chillers and their components.
• Work closely with the chiller product teams in generating service enabling product enhancements that consider the best balance of cost, performance, and reliability.
• Works closely with the Product Teams on Chiller Retrofit offerings and finding ways to move from time-based maintenance recommendations to proactive condition-based recommendations.
• Utilize warranty returns as a source of content from component tear downs, to troubleshooting content for knowledge exchange. Assists in Root Cause Analysis (RCAs) to drive corrective field actions and reduce future failures.

Required

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Mechanical Engineering with a minimum of 8-10 years of related work experience, or minimum of 15 years related work experience in HVAC equipment or a similar field supporting Data Centers or other Mission Critical Applications
• Demonstrated ability to lead an execution team successfully, including the coordination of other Johnson Controls resources
• Interpersonal skills to effectively connect with both internal and external customers
• Effectively communicates project progress, issues, financial status and customer satisfaction to senior management as required
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team
• Good organizational skills with attention to detail
• Proficiency in Microsoft Suite Applications
• Demonstrated ability to simultaneously lead a large and diverse number of projects with professionalism, cooperation, and persistence
• Able to travel both Domestic and International up to 15%

HIRING SALARY RANGE

$115,000.00 – 150,000.00 USD Annual. Salary to be determined by the education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities of the applicant, internal equity, and alignment with market data. This position includes a competitive benefits package.
