Healthie, an AI-native, ONC-Certified EHR platform, is seeking a senior engineer to build and scale automated workflows for healthcare providers. You will own end-to-end delivery of customer-facing automation features, shaping how clinics automate clinical and operational processes on the Healthie platform.

Ideal candidates have substantial experience with event-driven systems, Rails-based backends, and cloud infrastructure (preferably AWS).

Automate by Healthie gives our customers the ability to set up deterministic, and ultimately agentic, workflows that reduce clicks and streamline operations for clinical care delivery at scale. A simple example is allowing customers to set up a rule “when X happens in a client’s record, do Y” but the potential applications across the surface area of our platform are endless.

You’ll be a founding engineer on this high-velocity, high-impact team that builds, runs, and consistently improves our automations product: the event pipeline, the triggers and actions, and the interface customers use to configure them.

You’re a fit for this role if you have deep customer empathy (product engineering) and enjoy spending time sifting through customer pain points, identifying trends, and implementing opportunities for customers to automate complex clinical and operational processes across the platform.

What You'll Do

• Build and expand Healthie’s customer-facing workflow automation capabilities, enabling healthcare organizations to automate operational and clinical workflows directly within the Healthie platform.
• Develop new automation triggers and actions across core product areas, including scheduling, charting, billing, messaging, and patient engagement, helping customers reduce manual work and streamline care delivery.
• Engineer reliable, scalable automation infrastructure, including retries, idempotency, error handling, failure visibility, and clear customer-facing feedback when automated workflows don't execute as expected.
• Ship an intuitive, scalable, and error-free Automation builder that enables Healthie customers to create, configure, and manage workflows without requiring technical expertise.
• Identify and implement opportunities to leverage AI, LLM APIs, and intelligent workflow orchestration to deliver smarter, more adaptive automation capabilities that improve customer efficiency and operational outcomes.
• Collaborate cross-functionally with Engineering, Product, Security, and Operations to ensure automation capabilities are secure, scalable, and seamlessly integrated across the Healthie platform.
• Own the end-to-end technical delivery of customer-facing automation features, from architecture and development through deployment, monitoring, and optimization, while establishing reusable frameworks, engineering standards, and best practices.

About you

• 8+ years of professional software engineering experience, including significant hands‑on experience designing and implementing production-grade automation solutions.
• Experience building and running event-driven or workflow systems in production, including on-call responsibility for them.
• Comfort working in Rails or a similar backend framework.
• Experience handling the unglamorous parts of integration work: webhooks, queues, duplicate events, rate limits, and partial failures.
• Ability to explain technical tradeoffs to non-engineers, in writing or in person.
• Experience with cloud infrastructure, preferably AWS, and modern CI/CD tooling.
• Familiarity with workflow orchestration, job scheduling, event-driven architectures, and automation frameworks.
• Experience working with relational databases such as PostgreSQL and background processing systems such as Redis or Sidekiq.
• Demonstrated ability to independently identify opportunities, design technical solutions, and deliver measurable improvements.
• Strong troubleshooting skills and an understanding of observability, system reliability, and production operations.
• Excellent communication skills and the ability to collaborate across technical and nontechnical teams.

Nice to Have

• Experience working in healthcare technology, EHR platforms, or other highly regulated environments.
• Familiarity with HIPAA, healthcare data privacy, and secure automation practices.
• Experience with Ruby on Rails, React, and GraphQL.
• Experience with AI-powered development tools, LLM APIs, or building agentic workflow automation tools.
• Experience automating healthcare workflows involving clinical operations, billing, claims processing, or patient engagement.
• This is a full‑time, remote position located within the United States
• U.S. work authorization is required, Healthie does not provide sponsorship.
• The base compensation for this position is $190,000 - $220,000.
