Job summary

NV5, Inc. in Nevada City, CA is seeking a Staff Engineer to join our in-office geotechnical and civil engineering team. You will assist with engineering analysis, design development, drafting, and project implementation under the guidance of a Senior Engineer.

The ideal candidate has Civil Engineering training (master’s preferred) with 1–4 years of experience, is pursuing an EIT toward a PE, and is proficient in AutoCAD/Civil3D; GIS a plus. 100% in-office work in Nevada City is required.

Qualifications

• Geotechnical knowledge of soils, concrete, and asphalt.
• Proficient in AutoCAD and Civil3D Design software.
• MS Excel and MS Word proficiency.
• GIS knowledge is a plus.
• EIT working towards a PE license.

Responsibilities

• Conduct geotechnical investigations and field studies (75%-80%).
• Prepare, check, and review working plans, detail drawings, and specifications for layout, foundations, structural steel, and underground utilities under supervision.
• Develop 2D and 3D construction/layout drawings for site grading and drainage.
• Coordinate Civil and Structural designs with other disciplines.
• Review subcontractor drawings against base models for accuracy.
• Maintain project drawing files per company standards.
• Collaborate with Geotechnical, Civil, and Geologic teams.

Overview

NV5’s Nevada City, CA office is seeking a Staff Engineer who resides in or near Northern California (preferably in Sacramento, Placer or Nevada County) to join our dynamic, in-office team. This position will support a diverse portfolio of infrastructure projects involving geotechnical and civil engineering.

Working under the guidance of a Senior Engineer, you will assist with engineering analysis, design development, drafting, technical evaluations, and project implementation. You will collaborate with civil, structural, and environmental engineering professionals while gaining hands‑on experience in project planning, problem‑solving, and multidisciplinary coordination.

Responsibilities

• Will be conducting geotechnical investigations and field studies 75%-80%


• Prepares, checks, and reviews working plans, detail drawings, and specifications for layout and construction of site layout, foundations, structural steel, and underground utilities while under the direct supervision of the Senior Manager, project engineer, or project managers.


• Development of 2D and 3D construction/layout drawings for site grading/drainage/permit drawings.


• Coordinate Civil and Structural designs with Mechanical and Electrical / I&C disciplines.


• Review and compare Civil / Structural subcontractor drawings against base models for accuracy and completeness.


• Maintain or develop new project drawing files for all related drawings in accordance with company standards and procedures


• Will be working in a collaborative environment made up of Geotechnical, Civil, and Geologic engineers and designers.

Qualifications

Specific Knowledge & Skills:

• Soils, concrete, and asphalt knowledge and materials experience


• Proficient in AutoCAD and Civil3D Design software


• MS Excel Spreadsheet software


• MS Word Processing software


• GIS software is a plus

Education and/or Experience:

Civil Engineering or a master's with a focus in geotechnical engineering

• 1-4 years of experience is a plus


• EIT working towards a PE license

Requirement: Must be able to come into the office 100% in Nevada City, CA

Compensation and Benefits

• The pay range for this California position is $30.00 - $45.00 per hour. Base pay offered may be higher or lower depending on job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and location of the candidate. Restricted stock units may be provided as part of the compensation package, in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits, dependent on the position offered.
