Job summary

Shipt is seeking a Staff SRE who will lead reliability initiatives across engineering, focusing on architecture for resilience and modern observability. You will partner with Checkout, Logistics, Catalog, Search, and Shopper Experience teams to implement SLO-driven practices and automated recovery.

You will build self-service tooling, drive incident response improvements, and guide Kubernetes infrastructure in multi-cloud environments, enabling safe deployments and scalable reliability.

Qualifications

• 8+ years of engineering experience.
• 5+ years running complex microservices at scale on Kubernetes within cloud environments (AWS and/or GCP).
• Fluent in at least one modern language used for system tooling and backend services.
• Infrastructure as Code (IaC): Advanced experience with Terraform, Helm, and GitOps workflows (e.g., ArgoCD, Flux).
• Observability Expertise with Datadog, Prometheus, Grafana, OpenTelemetry, and central logging platforms.
• Networking & Edge Security: TCP/IP, HTTP/2, gRPC, service meshes (Istio, Linkerd), CDN routing (Cloudflare, Fastly), and API gateways.

Responsibilities

• Build automated tooling and self-service infrastructure for safe deployments and reliable monitoring.
• Serve as a technical escalation point during critical incidents and drive blameless post-mortems.
• Establish SLO-driven engineering across domain product teams and improve incident response workflows.

Impact As a Staff SRE at Shipt, you will serve as a technical leader across our engineering organization. In this role, you won’t just put out fires—you will architect system resilience, pioneer modern observability, and eliminate systemic friction across our distributed microservices.

You’ll work closely with domain product teams (Checkout, Logistics, Catalog, Search, and Shopper Experience) to establish SLO-driven engineering, improve incident response workflows, and drive our multi-cloud and Kubernetes infrastructure strategy forward. In this role you will be responsible for building automated tooling and self-service infrastructure to empower product engineers to deploy safely, monitor effectively, and manage their own service reliability.
A core component of this work will also be acting as a technical escalation point during critical incidents while driving a blameless post-mortem culture focused on root-cause elimination, long-term remediations, and automated recovery.
What You’ll Need to Be Successful

• 8+ years of engineering experience
• 5+ years running complex microservices at scale on Kubernetes within cloud environments (AWS and/or GCP).

Pay Range $95,800-$185,000

Work Arrangement To foster connection while offering continued flexibility, hybrid team members have the following in-office expectations:
Hybrid roles in Birmingham, AL typically work in-office at least 2 days per week, with core in-office days on Wednesdays and Thursdays.
Hybrid roles in Minneapolis, MN typically work in-office at least 1 day per week on either Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday.
Hybrid roles in San Francisco, CA typically work in-office at least 1 day per week between Monday and Thursday.
