Job summary

General Motors is seeking a Staff Embedded Software Engineer to lead the development of distributed control and data plane infrastructure for a fleet of vehicles. You will design, optimize, and operate on-vehicle software that retrieves cloud configurations and streams data to cloud storage.

The role emphasizes experience with C/C++, Linux/Android/QNX, and fleet management systems, plus strong collaboration with DevOps and cloud teams.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
Proficiency in programming with C, C++, and related languages (8+ years hands-on development).
Experience developing for Linux, Android, and QNX platforms.
Strong understanding of distributed systems, configuration management, and large-scale data pipelines.
Experience designing, developing, or operating a control plane, fleet management system, or other large-scale distributed coordination service.
Familiarity with vehicle communication protocols (UDS, CAN, SOME/IP, XCP).
Familiarity with Autosar standards.
Experience leading complex cross-organizational initiatives.
Expert in software development and optimization.
Strong problem-solving and communication skills.
Production deployment support experience.

Responsibilities

Design, implement, and maintain the on-vehicle control plane that retrieves configuration from the cloud and applies it across the vehicle's ECUs.
Design, implement, and maintain the on-vehicle data plane that collects, processes, and forwards data from vehicle systems to cloud storage.
Optimize control and data planes for reliability over intermittent connectivity with minimal CPU and memory footprint.
Integrate with cloud services such as Azure, AWS S3, and Firestore for configuration delivery and data egress.
Collaborate with DevOps and Cloud teams to roll out on-vehicle software and configuration safely.
Instrument software with observability to monitor the fleet and diagnose issues in production.
Contribute to open-source by reporting issues and patches.
Drive the technical direction for managing thousands of vehicles from a single control plane, including versioning, identity, and remote diagnostics.
Mentor peers and support team growth.
Promote best practices within the software community and maintain a productive team culture.
