Job summary

GRAIL seeks a Staff Software Engineer for the Data Team in Sunnyvale, CA. You will own production-grade systems turning raw clinical and operational data into analysis-ready datasets, partnering with scientists and clinical teams to ensure data integrity and privacy.

You will work on data-intensive systems, contribute to data models and workflows, and mentor engineers while advancing regulatory-compliant data pipelines in a dynamic cancer research setting.

Qualifications

• 7+ years of production-grade software experience.
• Strong fundamentals: system design, data modeling, API design, tested code.
• Experience building data-intensive systems beyond SQL-only pipelines.
• Proficiency in Go or Python (or similar).
• Experience with data modeling, validation, and transforming real-world data.
• BS/MS/PhD in CS, Engineering, Bioinformatics, or related field.
• 2+ years in regulated/clinical data environments (HIPAA, CLIA, GCP, FDA).
• Direct experience supporting scientific teams (bioinformatics, clinical research).
• Experience designing systems that manage lab/bioinformatics data (LIMS, pipelines).
• GxP familiarity and regulatory reporting is a plus.
• Experience in biotech or life sciences companies and data lifecycle management.

Responsibilities

• Design and build production-grade software systems for data lifecycles.
• Collaborate with scientists, clinicians, and data teams on data needs.
• Develop services, data models, and workflow components with data integrity and access controls.
• Navigate schema evolution, privacy, and consent requirements.
• Lead long-lived systems evolving with clinical and research programs.
• Mentor engineers and collaborate with scientists on software decisions.
• Contribute to documentation and onboarding to support data literacy.
