Applied Systems in Chicago offers a Staff Engineer, Data Platform role focusing on leading architecture and technical decisions for our customer-facing data platform. You will shape the end-to-end data lifecycle, from ingestion to consumption, balancing scalability and reliability with practical hands-on contribution.

The role guides Data Lake, data engineering, analytics, visualization, and data science efforts, partnering across teams to raise engineering standards and enable AI-enabled

Qualifications

• 8+ years of software engineering with strong technical impact.
• Deep data-focused software engineering across ingestion, streaming, storage, transformation, visualization, and consumption.
• Proficient in Google Cloud Platform, AWS, or Azure with architecture and scaleExperience.
• Experience designing/operating data lakes and streaming systems with data accuracy, stability, availability, and performance in mind.
• Strong fundamentals: SDLC, version control, code review, testing, CI/CD, ops.
• Hands-on programming in Python or Go and strong SQL/data architecture knowledge.
• Influencing technical direction across teams without direct reporting authority.

Responsibilities

• Lead architecture and technical decision-making across end-to-end data lifecycle.
• Drive modern engineering approaches through PoCs, evaluations, and scalable improvements.
• Improve scalability, reliability, observability of data flowing into Data Lake.
• Lead initiatives to reduce streaming latency and modernize database architecture away from SQL Server.
• Collaborate with software, data, BI engineering, data science, product teams and leadership.
• Remain hands-on through prototyping, debugging, code reviews, and implementation when needed.
• Mentor engineers and foster strong software engineering practices and shared ownership.
