Job summary

The City of New York, via the Department of Consumer and Worker Protection, seeks an experienced Agency Attorney to Staff Counsel in the General Counsel Division. You will initiate, investigate, and litigate cases at OATH and NY state court against violators of licensing and consumer protection laws.

Reporting to the Associate General Counsel, you will handle complex enforcement, negotiate settlements, and contribute to agency outreach and policy work while meeting bar eligibility and

Qualifications

• Admitted to the New York State Bar.
• One year of United States legal experience after admission to a state bar, or six months of service as Agency Attorney Intern (30086).

Responsibilities

• Investigating and prosecuting businesses engaged in illegal conduct, including online and web-based operations.
• Identifying unlawful conduct for potential investigation and litigation; developing investigation plans.
• Overseeing regulatory enforcement projects and rulemakings; developing large-scale enforcement plans.
• Performing legal research and drafting memoranda on agency issues.
• Drafting general correspondence and legal documents to respondents, counsel, regulated businesses, and consumers.
• Conducting depositions, negotiating settlements, and trying cases for the agency in administrative and state courts.
• Drafting and negotiating settlement agreements of enforcement proceedings.
• Participating in review of external-facing material for agency outreach and trainings.
