Job summary

Encore Capital Group is seeking a Staff Counsel to draft, review and file legal pleadings and manage collection litigation. You will advise on compliance with consumer laws and supervise junior staff as needed, supporting multiple business units and outside counsel.

Requires CA Bar certification and at least 3 years of legal experience. The role focuses on cost-effective litigation management, settlements, and protecting company interests across hearings, trials, and mediations.

Qualifications

• 3+ years legal work experience.
• JD degree from an accredited law school.

Responsibilities

• Create, review, direct and resolve collection litigation matters cost-effectively by working with business clients and legal support staff.
• Maintain and enhance company reputation with courts, vendors, outside counsel, and consumers.
• Negotiate with opposing counsel, conduct discovery and respond to discovery and prepare and attend hearings and trials.
• Represent client in highly contested cases, counterclaims, appeals and cross claims.
• Ensure adherence to Consumer Bill of Rights by enforcing relevant company policies.
• Assist with special projects.
• Provide legal advice to company to support compliance with laws.
