Job summary

PlayOn is seeking a Staff Cloud Engineer to own the AWS platform behind ticketing, streaming, and fundraising for high school sports nationwide. You will lead cloud cost visibility, Kubernetes on EKS, and Terraform-based provisioning while guiding modernization efforts and security posture.

This hands-on role reports as a senior IC and collaborates with product engineering, security, and finance to optimize spent, reliability, and deployment speed across live events.

Qualifications

• 7+ years of professional infrastructure, platform, or site reliability experience at staff level.
• Deep production-grade experience operating Amazon EKS under real load, including architecture and upgrades.
• Expert Terraform experience with multi-environment state management.
• Fluency with the CNCF ecosystem and AWS Well-Architected Framework.
• Experience building cost visibility dashboards or tooling used by engineers.
• Experience planning cloud modernization and migrations without a rewrite‑everything approach.
• Proficiency in Go, Python, or TypeScript to build real tooling.
• Working knowledge of AWS core services: EC2, VPC, IAM, S3, CloudWatch, Cost Explorer.
• Experience driving technical change across teams you don’t manage.
• Strong written communication; design documents are a primary deliverable.

Responsibilities

• Build reporting and tooling that surfaces cloud spend by domain, team, and project.
• Own our Kubernetes platform on EKS: cluster architecture, upgrades, multi-tenancy, networking, workload isolation.
• Design and maintain Terraform modules and reusable patterns for self‑service provisioning.
• Standardize CI/CD across services with progressive delivery and automated rollback.
• Plan modernization and migration work, moving legacy workloads to containers and managed services.
• Harden the platform with IAM boundaries, secrets management, network policy, image provenance, and audit posture.
• Participate in on‑call and lead incident response when infrastructure is implicated.
• Raise the technical bar through design reviews, code reviews, and mentorship of senior engineers.
