The Charge Nurse at North Mississippi Health Services is responsible for providing safe, quality patient care through the nursing process, ensuring compliance with policies and regulations, and maintaining effective communication with the multidisciplinary team. The Charge Nurse must also be able to respond to rapidly changing patient needs, handle staffing assignments, and act as a liaison between patients and physicians or case management when necessary.

Clinical Practice

1. Uses the nursing process to provide safe, quality patient care and document accordingly.
2. Works to ensure compliance with all NMHS policies and requirements as directed by the Nurse Manager and Educator.

Education

1. Provides patient/family education and acts as a resource for existing staff and new employees.
2. Attends the Preceptor class to ensure proper training of new employees.

Communication

1. Maintains communication with multidisciplinary team members to provide holistic care to the patient.
2. Leads daily huddles on each unit to ensure proper assignments and identify team members for the shift.
3. Delegates tasks to be completed during the shift to ensure EOC guidelines are maintained on a daily basis for regulatory agency compliance.

Customer Relations

1. Projects a caring, friendly, and helpful image to patients and other customers.
2. Utilizes the patient’s communication board (white board) to identify name, date, goals, other staff and procedures or tests for the day to keep the patients and families informed.
3. Complies with NMHS behavioral standards.
4. Ensures staff RNs are utilizing the communication boards.

Self-Development

1. Maintains competency by staying informed of changing trends in nursing practice.
2. Attends annual review and unit specifics within the department.
3. Performs required continuing education hours online and in the classroom.

Regulatory Knowledge

1. Complies with regulatory and accrediting agency requirements.

Job Knowledge

1. Must be licensed to practice as a RN in the state of MS.
2. Must complete RN orientation and approved unit specific checklist.
3. Must maintain a current AHA CPR Certification.
4. ACLS, PALS, TB certification, or certification if required by the department.
5. Must maintain department requirements for continuing education and any specific unit requirements to provide appropriate age-specific care; annual review and unit specifics, CARES.
6. Must have leadership skills and attend leadership classes as offered by the education department.
7. Lead and participate in the Performance Improvement project of the unit.
8. Must have effective communication and teaching skills.
9. General knowledge of various regulatory and accrediting standards.
