Job summary

Gusto is seeking a senior engineer to own the systems that move money and assets for Gusto Retirement. You will ship production code, own backend services, and partner with product, compliance, and operations to translate complex financial requirements into reliable software.

The Financial Infrastructure team handles payments, settlements, tax and compliance integrations, and more. You’ll mentor engineers, work across teams, and focus on correctness and scalable delivery.

Qualifications

• 8+ years of software engineering experience shipping production products.
• Strong experience with services, APIs, and data-heavy workflows.
• Experience with financial systems, payments, or high-correctness domains.
• Owns systems end-to-end, including production support.
• Collaborates with PMs and cross-functional partners.
• Mentors engineers to improve performance.
• Proficient with Ruby on Rails or similar backend framework.

Responsibilities

• Design, build, and ship services and APIs for money movement and financial integrations.
• Work on payments, settlements, reconciliation, and corrections involving real customer funds.
• Build and support payroll integration, KYB/KYC, 401k loans, billing and invoicing, and IRA workflows.
• Partner with product, compliance, and operations to scope work and deliver production-ready solutions.
• Debug production issues and improve reliability, observability, and operational tooling.
• Collaborate with other engineering teams to integrate with shared systems and platforms.
• Mentor engineers to help solve the hardest technical problems at scale.
• Write clear, reliable, well-tested code that ships quickly and scales.
