Job summary

Gusto is seeking an experienced software engineer to own backend services and APIs for retirement money movement. You will ship production code, handle real financial edge cases, and partner with product/compliance/operations to deliver reliable, scalable software.

Strong focus on correctness and end-to-end ownership is required. The Financial Infrastructure team handles payments, settlements, tax and compliance integrations, and more, with a senior, cross-functional style of work.

Qualifications

• 8+ years of software engineering experience in production products or platforms.
• Strong experience with services, APIs, and data-heavy workflows.
• Experience with financial systems or high-correctness domains.
• Owns systems end-to-end including production support.
• Collaborates with PMs and cross-functional partners to deliver scope.
• Mentor engineers and write reliable, well-tested code.

Responsibilities

• Design, build, and ship services and APIs for money movement and financial integration.
• Work on payments, settlements, reconciliation, and corrections with real funds.
• Support payroll integration, KYB/KYC, 401k loans, billing, IRA workflows.
• Partner with product/compliance/ops to scope and deliver production-ready solutions.
• Debug production issues and improve reliability and observability.
• Mentor engineers and collaborate across teams to integrate with shared systems.
• Write clear, reliable code that ships quickly and scales.
• Build products that customers genuinely love.
