Job summary

Zest for Tech in New York is seeking a Staff Backend Engineer to lead design, build and scale complex distributed systems and core backend infrastructure. This is a hands-on, highly technical role with autonomy and ownership within a small team of senior engineers.

You will drive architectural decisions, mentor peers, and craft high-throughput APIs and data models while tackling scalability and reliability challenges.

Qualifications

• 10+ years of software engineering experience.
• Experience architecting large-scale backend systems.
• Distributed systems and high-throughput data processing expertise.
• Proficiency in at least two of TypeScript, Python, Go.
• Experience with SQL and NoSQL databases.
• Independent architectural decision-making capability.
• Hands-on engineering focus with shipping velocity.
• Familiar with AI coding tools in development workflows.

Responsibilities

• Lead architecture and development of complex distributed systems.
• Design high-volume data ingestion and processing pipelines.
• Build scalable asynchronous systems and event-driven workflows.
