Job summary

603 Legal Aid seeks a Staff Attorney to provide free civil legal services to low-income residents in New Hampshire, with emphasis on Veterans and housing issues. The role blends direct representation, outreach, and program coordination within the Hope for Heroes initiative.

You will manage a caseload across housing, family law, and benefits, partnering with VA and community organizations to expand access to services statewide. Hybrid work and ongoing professional development are offered.

Qualifications

• Admitted to practice law in New Hampshire or eligible to obtain admission within one year of hire.
• Experience in litigation, client representation, and/or legal advising.
• Demonstrated commitment to serving individuals with low incomes; trauma-informed approach.
• Familiarity with Veterans issues and resources related to homelessness or housing instability.
• Experience with grant-funded programs including documentation, reporting and compliance.
• Demonstrated cultural competency and ability to work with diverse communities.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Excellent organizational skills and ability to manage multiple priorities.
• Proficiency with technology used for case management, data tracking and reporting.
• Ability to collaborate with colleagues, community partners and clients.
• Commitment to public interest law and social justice.
• New Hampshire courts or administrative systems preferred.

Responsibilities

• Maintain an active caseload of civil legal matters including housing, family law, Veterans benefits and other issues.
• Obtain VA accreditation and represent Veterans in service-connected benefits and discharge upgrades.
• Conduct legal research, draft pleadings, and support clients through complex systems.
• Collaborate with other staff attorneys as needed and connect clients with partners.
• Provide on-site, virtual and community-based services including mobile outreach.
• Coordinate and oversee monthly medical-legal partnerships with VA campuses.
• Obtain and review medical and military records for VA claims.
• Maintain and review claims in VBMS and related systems.
• Build relationships with Veteran-serving organizations and community partners.
• Coordinate trainings and legal education sessions for partner staff.
• Lead or participate in community education and outreach initiatives.
• Develop accessible legal education materials for Veterans.
