Job summary

The Office of Attorney Regulation Counsel in Colorado supports the Colorado Supreme Court by regulating the practice of law, protecting the public, and ensuring that providers are competent, diligent, and honest under the Colorado Rules of Professional Conduct.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Assist the Office of Attorney Regulation Counsel in the operation of reviewing attorney status and standing and related processes.
• Administer admissions and annual registrations oversight; enforce CLE and discipline rules as required by the Colorado Rules of Professional Conduct.
• Educate the public and legal profession on duties and requirements; handle client files for attorneys and LLPs who can no longer practice law.

Job description

The Office of Attorney Regulation Counsel’s duties involve assisting the Colorado Supreme Court in regulating all phases of the practice of law in Colorado. The primary purpose behind each of these duties is protection of the public, ensuring that Colorado providers of legal services are competent, diligent, communicative, honest and in compliance with the Colorado Rules of Professional Conduct.

The Office of Attorney Regulation Counsel administers the bar and licensed legal paraprofessional (LLP) examinations, screens each applicant’s character and fitness to practice law in Colorado, and enforces all other attorney and LLP admission and annual registration functions. The office educates the general public and the legal profession on the underlying duties and requirements contained in the Colorado Rules of Professional Conduct. The office enforces the Colorado rules regarding attorney and LLP discipline and disability proceedings and mandatory continuing legal and judicial education. When necessary, the office oversees the handling of client files for attorneys and LLPs who can no longer practice law.

The Office of Attorney Regulation Counsel also investigates and prosecutes individuals who cause harm to consumers when engaging in the unauthorized practice of law in Colorado.

The Office of Attorney Regulation Counsel works with seven permanent Supreme Court committees in regulating the practice of law in Colorado.

Attorney Regulation Counsel serves at the pleasure of the Colorado Supreme Court. The Supreme Court Advisory Committee assists the Court by reviewing the productivity, effectiveness and efficiency of the attorney regulation system, including Attorney Regulation Counsel.

Assists the Office of Attorney Registration and Office of Continuing Legal and Judicial Education in the operation of reviewing attorney and public inquires relating to attorney status and standing. Review and process applications for limited admission and special authorization or certification to practice law in Colorado. Review of CLJE application forms and eligibility.

Bachelor’s degree or graduation from high school or equivalent and three years of general clerical or receptionist experience. Typing skills and familiarity with word processing applications preferred.
