Job summary

General Motors in Mountain View, CA is seeking a Staff AI/ML Software Engineer to lead adaptation and distillation of foundation models for automotive edge. You will design parameter-efficient fine‑tuning, RLHF, and dataset curation to enable safe, efficient on-vehicle AI.

You will guide architecture for model optimization pipelines, ensure cabin-context understanding, and drive continual improvement with edge quantization, collaborating with cross-functional teams.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in CS, ML, Data Science, Mathematics, or equivalent practical experience.
• 8+ years of software engineering or applied ML research experience.
• Deep proficiency in PyTorch.
• Hands-on experience fine-tuning large language models or vision-language models, with demonstrable results.
• Experience with at least two of: knowledge distillation, parameter-efficient fine-tuning, pruning, or quantization.
• Based in or willing to work hybrid out of Mountain View, CA or Seattle, WA, reporting to the office three days per week at minimum.

Responsibilities

• Design and build knowledge distillation pipelines transferring reasoning, vision, and language to compact edge-friendly architectures.
• Apply and scale parameter-efficient fine-tuning techniques (LoRA, QLoRA) to cabin-interaction models.
• Build and own the reinforcement learning flywheel with RLHF/DPO and align in-cabin data collection with model improvement.
• Curate, evaluate, and synthetically generate datasets to teach smaller models to interpret passenger intent and visual cues.
• Implement Quantization‑Aware Training to preserve accuracy when compressing models for hardware.
• Establish evaluation frameworks and benchmarks for fine‑tuned models focusing on hallucination, domain accuracy, and safety.
• Own base model strategy and justify core architecture choices for future deployments.
