Abbott is seeking a Staff AI/Agentic Engineer to lead the design and implementation of complex multi-agent systems and reusable patterns within the AI/Agentic Engineering team at an onsite Abbott location in Illinois. The role emphasizes substantial autonomy, architecture decisions, and a strong focus on safety, reliability, and scalable agent solutions daily.

You will set standards for durable workflows, drive context-engineering, and own evaluation and CI/shadow testing.

Qualifications

• 7–10 years of software engineering experience with distributed, API-driven production systems.
• Hands-on experience designing, coding, testing, deploying, and operating agentic or LLM-based applications in production at scale.
• Strong experience with Python and at least one of TypeScript, Go, or Java, including distributed systems and API design.

Responsibilities

• Lead design and implementation of complex multi-agent systems and coordination patterns.
• Set standards for durable workflow design with state, checkpoints, replay, idempotency, and compensation.
• Drive context-engineering and retrieval across multiple workflows and memory hierarchies.
• Own production reliability for high-complexity agentic systems including latency, cost, and incident response.
• Mentor mid-level and junior engineers; lead cross-team initiatives and reviews.
