Job summary

Abbott in Illinois is seeking a senior individual-contributor engineer to set technical direction for production agentic systems. This role leads the design of complex multi-agent solutions and reusable engineering patterns, partnering with the Tech Lead/Architect on architecture decisions and serving as a primary technical escalation point across the AI/Agentic Engineering team.

The role operates with substantial autonomy, raises the technical bar, and mentors mid-level and junior engineers

Qualifications

• 7–10 years of software engineering experience.
• Hands-on experience designing, coding, testing, deploying, and operating agentic or LLM-based applications in production at scale.
• Deep understanding of agent architecture, tool calling, durable state, multi-agent coordination, context engineering, retrieval, evaluation, observability, and safety controls.

Responsibilities

• Lead design and implementation of complex multi-agent systems with clear boundaries and failure handling.
• Set standards for durable workflow design across the team.
• Drive context-engineering and retrieval strategy across workflows.
• Lead evaluation strategy with datasets, metrics, and CI gates.
• Own production reliability for high-complexity agentic systems and respond to incidents.
• Set engineering standards through reviews and architecture docs.
• Create reusable patterns and tooling in partnership with AI Platform Engineering.
• Mentor mid-level and junior engineers and lead cross-team initiatives.
