HMSHost Corporation in Bethesda, MD, seeks a Staff Accountant I to manage the full accounting cycle, including month-end close and payroll accruals. You will prepare journal entries and reconcile accounts, ensuring GAAP-compliant reporting and accurate financial statements.

Based at the North America Support Center, you will interact with multiple departments, drive process improvements, and support audits. A 5+ year accounting background and hospitality experience are highly valued.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance with 5+ years in accounting.
• Hospitality/retail/F&B industry experience preferred.
• GAAP knowledge and practical application.
• Strong Excel skills including Pivot, VLOOKUP.
• Experience with SAP or PeopleSoft a plus.
• Location in Bethesda, MD.

Responsibilities

• Perform account analysis and reconciliations to support financial reporting.
• Prepare journal entries for month-end and year-end close, incl payroll accruals.
• Communicate with internal/external customers to resolve discrepancies.
• Identify process improvements to enhance accuracy and efficiency.
• Process payments for union benefits per agreements and timelines.
• Support audits and maintain documentation.

Advertised Compensation:$58,300.00to $68,600.00

Purpose: The Staff Accountant I performs all aspects of the accounting cycle including month-end and year-end close, journal entries pertaining to payroll accruals, and account reconciliations.

Essential Functions:

• Performs account analysis and reconciliations; ensures timely follow-up and resolution of outstanding issues to support accurate financial reporting
• Prepares journal entries to support month-end and year-end close processes, including payroll accruals and related adjustments
• Communicates with a wide range of internal and external customers, including other departments, field locations, and management, to gather information and resolve discrepancies
• Identifies and recommend process improvements to create efficiencies and enhance accuracy within daily accounting tasks
• Performs analysis and processes payments for union benefits in accordance with applicable agreements and timelines
• Supports peers and management on non-routine and ad hoc projects, contributing analytical and technical expertise as needed
• Reviews and validates financial data to ensure integrity of reporting across assigned accounts and cost centers
• Assists in the preparation of financial statement schedules and supporting documentation for internal and external audit requests
• Maintains organized records and documentation in accordance with company policy and internal controls standards
• Monitors compliance with company accounting policies and GAAP, escalating issues or exceptions to management as appropriate

Reporting Relationship: The Staff Accountant I reports to the Senior Manager of Accounting

Minimum Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills, and Work Environment :

• Education and Experience: The combination of education and professional experience must exceed 5 years:
  • In a technical role: Requires 5 years of experience engaged in delivering accounting programs
• A bachelor’s degree in a program related to the functional area can count for 3 of the 5-year requirement
• In the industry: Hospitality, F&B and/or retail experience preferred
• Specialized Training:
  • Training that leads to knowledge of GAAP principles and their practical application
• Solid Excel skills including pivot tables, VLOOKUP, and data analysis functions
• Experience with PeopleSoft Human Capital Management and SAP a plus
• Analytical skills to interpret financial data, identify root causes of variances, and develop solutions
• High level of accuracy in work product with strong quality control mindset
• Flexibility to adjust to changing priorities; ability to manage multiple priorities and meet tight deadlines
• Business acumenand also has themindsetrequired to understand the long‑term implications of accounting to advance the organization’s goals
• Demonstrated history ofunderstanding the needs of the business,stakeholders, the employee population, and individual circumstances
• Demonstrated history ofcreating and maintaining positive work environments
