Job summary

Archer Lewis is seeking a Staff Accountant for our Charleston, SC team. The role focuses on independently performing accounting and tax functions across client engagements, preparing financial statements, and analyzing results.

You will communicate with clients and internal stakeholders, supporting month-end and year-end close processes. The position requires 2–4 years of accounting or tax experience and a Bachelor’s degree in accounting or Finance.

Responsibilities

• Prepare and review journal entries and general ledger activity with minimal supervision.

• Prepare and review individual, partnership, and business tax returns under supervision.
• Communicate with clients regarding tax matters and information requests.
• Collaborate with senior team members on engagements while managing day-to-day execution.

What You’ll Do

The Staff Accountant is responsible for independently performing accounting and tax functions across a variety of client engagements. This role applies professional accounting principles and exercises judgment in preparing financial statements, analyzing results, and determining appropriate accounting and tax treatment. The position requires the ability to manage assigned engagements with limited supervision and to communicate directly with clients and internal stakeholders.

General Accounting & Financial Analysis

• Prepare and review journal entries and general ledger activity with minimal supervision
• Own and manage portions of the month-end and year-end close process
• Analyze financial statements and identify discrepancies, trends, and areas requiring adjustment
• Recommend appropriate accounting treatment based on GAAP and firm standards
• Ensure accuracy and completeness of financial records and support documentation

Tax Compliance & Advisory

• Prepare and review individual, partnership, and business tax returns
• Identify tax issues and recommend appropriate treatment under supervision of senior leadership
• Conduct tax research and apply findings to client situations
• Communicate directly with clients regarding tax matters and information requests

Client Engagement & Communication

• Serve as a point of contact for assigned client workstreams
• Communicate financial results and explain accounting or tax positions to clients
• Collaborate with senior team members on complex engagements while managing day-to-day execution

Professional Judgment & Autonomy

• Exercise discretion and independent judgment in applying accounting and tax principles
• Prioritize and manage multiple engagements and deadlines
• Identify process improvements and contribute to operational efficiencies

What You’ll Bring

Education

• Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, or a related field

Experience

• 2-4years of relevant accounting or tax experience (internships applicable)

Technical Skills

• Proficiencyin Microsoft Excel
• Familiarity with accounting software (UltraTax) preferred
• CPA or actively pursuing CPA preferred

Soft Skills

• Demonstrated ability to apply accounting principles and exercise professional judgment
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
• Effective written and verbal communication skills, including client interaction
• Ability to work independently and manage competing priorities

• Base salary of $70,000 - $80,000 plus discretionary bonus (exact base salary amount will be dependent on experience)
