Job summary

Jonus Group is staffing a Staff Accountant for an insurance agency in Birmingham, AL. The ideal candidate has 3–5 years of accounting experience, preferably in insurance, and will support AP, AR, reconciliations, GL activity, agency bill accounting, and insurance commissions.

Strong Excel skills and familiarity with Applied Epic or Ascend are a plus. This is a full‑time, in‑office role offering a $60,000 salary along with a 401(k) match and health insurance benefits.

Qualifications

• 3–5 years of bookkeeping and/or accounting experience.
• Insurance agency accounting experience strongly preferred.
• Experience with AP, AR, bank reconciliations, journal entries, and general ledger reconciliations.
• Knowledge of agency bill accounting, direct bill commissions, and/or insurance accounting desirable.

Responsibilities

• Manage the full accounts payable process, including invoice processing and vendor payments
• Oversee accounts receivable, including invoicing, collections, and customer account reconciliations
• Process and accurately record client payments and insurance carrier commission payments
• Reconcile daily bank activity and investigate discrepancies
• Prepare, review, and post journal entries
• Perform monthly and year-end general ledger reconciliations
• Assist with month-end and year-end close activities
• Process and reconcile agency bill transactions
• Reconcile direct bill commission statements and research discrepancies
• Partner with insurance carriers and internal teams to resolve billing, commission, and accounting issues
• Utilize Applied Epic, Ascend, or other agency management/accounting systems as applicable
• Research and resolve accounting discrepancies while identifying opportunities to improve processes and controls
• Maintain accurate financial records and supporting documentation
• Assist with audits, financial reporting, and special accounting projects
