Job summary

Security Benefit is hiring a Staff Accountant I for Financial Reporting (STAT). Based in Overland Park, KS, you’ll support reinsurance settlement statements, monthly close, and ICFR-related controls. This role blends remote and on-site work with a collaborative, growth-focused team.

The ideal candidate has a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting and 1+ years of accounting or financial reporting experience, plus ERP experience (PeopleSoft or Oracle Fusion) and strong Excel skills.

Qualifications

  • Experience with ERP systems (PeopleSoft or Oracle Fusion preferred); intermediate to advanced Excel proficiency.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare reinsurance settlement statements and supporting schedules with a focus on accuracy and control.
  • Support month-end and quarter-end close processes per control requirements.
  • Maintain controls over reinsurance processes, including journal entries and reconciliations.
  • Develop and document procedures and control narratives.
  • Assist with internal and external audit requests and walkthroughs.
  • Analyze financial statements to identify trends and summarize findings for the Manager.
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders across Finance and Internal Controls.
  • Contribute to a culture of accountability and continuous improvement.

About the Role:
As a Staff Accountant, you will beresponsible for supporting the preparation, analysis, and accuracy of reinsurance settlement statements in accordance with U.S. STAT. This role contributes to the monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes; supports internal control over financial reporting (ICFR); and assists with external audit activities.

We report to the Manager, STAT Financial Reporting, this is an individual contributor role suited to a detail-oriented accounting professional who executes defined tasks with a high degree of accuracy and a growth mindset. This position is based in Overland Park, Kansas, Topeka, Kansas or Des Moines, Iowa. We work a hybrid schedule, offering flexibility to work both remotely and on-site.

  • Prepare reinsurance settlement statements and supporting schedules with a focus on accuracy, control integrity, and adherence to U.S. STAT;
  • Support the month-end and quarter-end close process, ensuring adherence to control requirements and timelines;
  • Assist in the maintenance of controls over the reinsurance processes, including journal entries, reconciliations, and disclosures;
  • Assist in the development and enhancement of procedures and control narratives;
  • Assist with internal and external audit requests, including walkthroughs, testing support, and remediation documentation;
  • Analyze financial statements to identify trends and ensure accuracy of reported results; summarize findings for review by the Manager;
  • Build and maintain collaborative working relationships with internal stakeholders across Finance and Internal Controls to support communication and process alignment;
  • Contribute to a culture of accountability, compliance, and continuous improvement;
  • Perform special projects and other duties as assigned.

What We’re Looking For:

Qualifications:

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or related field required.
  • Experience: 1+ years of accounting or financial reporting preferred.
  • Systems: Experience working with ERP systems (PeopleSoft or Oracle Fusion preferred); intermediate to advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Office Suite.
