• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance.
• 3+ years of progressive accounting experience.
• Payroll experience with ADP and payroll systems preferred.
• ERP experience with Sage Intacct required.
• Excel proficiency (pivot tables, VLOOKUP).
• Public accounting experience preferred.
• Strong GAAP and internal controls knowledge.
• AI/automation mindset to streamline accounting workflows.

Overview

Metabolon is seeking a detail-oriented and collaborative Staff Accountant to support core accounting functions and payroll processing. This position plays a vital role in ensuring financial accuracy, compliance, and the timely execution of payroll. Key responsibilities include accounts payable, general ledger reconciliations, payroll processing, and payroll reporting. The ideal candidate brings strong analytical and critical thinking skills, operational discipline, and a service-oriented mindset.

This position follows a hybrid work schedule. The incumbent will be required to work onsite at our Research Triangle Park, North Carolina office on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.

Responsibilities

• Process and reconcile vendor invoices and employee expense reports
• Prepare and post journal entries related to payroll, benefits, and accounts payable
• Perform monthly account reconciliations for key general ledger accounts
• Prepare accruals and account variance analysis for month-end close
• Prepare and submit payroll data; coordinate with global payroll providers to ensure timely and accurate payroll processing
• Generate and compile payroll-related reports for audits, tax filings, reconciliations, and internal reviews
• Review monthly Use/Sales Tax filings for accuracy before submission by Avalara and prepare year-end 1099/1096 reports
• Maintain and monitor AP-related internal controls
• Support financial audits by preparing schedules and providing documentation
• Help automate AP and procurement processes and maintain documentation of key controls
• Provide ad hoc analysis and reporting in support of accounting and payroll operations
• Audit and track employee timecards; resolve discrepancies to ensure payroll accuracy
• Review payroll changes in ADP (new hires, compensation changes, commissions, and terminations) against approved supporting documentation to ensure payroll accuracy and maintain strong internal controls
• Review paid time off and leave balances provided by HR to support payroll processing and accrued liability reporting

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance
• 3+ years of progressive accounting experience, including general ledger, account reconciliations, and month-end close.
• Payroll experience and exposure to both finance and payroll systems preferred
• Hands-on experience with an ERP system such as Sage Intacct required
• Experience with ADP Workforce Now, Concur, Mineral Tree, or Procuredesk is a plus
• Intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Excel (pivot tables, VLOOKUPs, etc.)
• Public accounting experience is strongly preferred
• Working knowledge of GAAP and internal controls
• Demonstrated ability to analyze data, investigate discrepancies to root cause, and recommend process or control improvements
• AI-forward mindset: curiosity and willingness to use AI and automation tools to streamline accounting and payroll workflows, improve accuracy, and continuously improve processes
• Strong attention to detail and analytical thinking
• Ability to manage sensitive and confidential information with integrity
• Highly organized, able to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines independently
