Job summary

Integrated Refugee & Immigrant Services in New Haven, CT seeks a Staff Accountant to support day-to-day accounting, including AP/AR, GL maintenance, bank reconciliations, and payroll support in a nonprofit setting.

You will ensure GAAP compliance, grant accounting, and timely financial reporting, collaborating with Finance, Programs, Development and Legal teams across hybrid work. Bachelor's degree plus 2–4 years' experience preferred.

ABOUT THE ROLE

The Staff Accountant is responsible for supporting the day-to-day accounting operations of the organization, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, general ledger maintenance, bank reconciliations, payroll support, grant accounting, and financial reporting. The Staff Accountant helps ensure the accuracy and integrity of financial records while supporting compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), nonprofit accounting standards, and grant requirements.

WHAT YOU'LL BRING TO THE ROLE

  • A passion for nonprofit financial management, compliance, and supporting mission-driven work
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting , Finance, Business Administration, or related field preferred.
  • 2-4 years of accounting experience required.
  • Nonprofit accounting experience preferred.
  • Experience with payroll processing or payroll support preferred.
  • Experience with accounting software and Microsoft Excel.
  • Understanding of GAAP and basic nonprofit accounting principles.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of financial and employee information.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
General Accounting
  • Prepare and post journal entries.
  • Maintain and reconcile general ledger accounts.
  • Perform monthly bank and balance sheet account reconciliations.
  • Assist with month-end and year-end closing activities.
  • Maintain accurate accounting records and supporting documentation.
  • Investigate and resolve accounting discrepancies.
Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable
  • Process vendor invoices and payments.
  • Prepare and record cash receipts and deposits.
  • Monitor outstanding receivables and follow up on collections as needed.
  • Reconcile vendor statements and resolve discrepancies.
  • Assist with maintaining vendor and customer records.
Payroll Support
  • Assist with payroll processing and payroll-related reconciliations.
  • Review payroll reports for accuracy.
  • Record payroll journal entries and allocations.
  • Support employee benefit and payroll deduction reconciliations.
  • Assist with year-end payroll reporting and W-2 preparation.
Grant and Fund Accounting
  • Assist with tracking grant revenues and expenditures.
  • Prepare grant-related reconciliations and supporting schedules.
  • Help ensure expenses are properly charged to grants and programs.
  • Support grant financial reporting requirements.
  • Maintain records for restricted and unrestricted funds.
Financial Reporting and Audit Support
  • Prepare account reconciliations and supporting schedules.
  • Assist in preparing monthly financial reports.
  • Support annual audits by preparing workpapers and documentation.
  • Assist with Form 990 preparation and other compliance reporting.
  • Maintain compliance with internal controls and organizational policies.

WORKING CONDITIONS
  • Must be based in Connecticut.
  • Hybrid/remote work environment, with periodic in-person meetings at IRIS offices in New Haven, CT.
  • Ability to work effectively in office and remote environments and maintain regular engagement with Finance, Programs, Development, and Legal teams.
Location

Connecticut (Hybrid/Remote).

Salary Range: $26.45 to $31.25 per hour, salary range is based on organization size commensurate with experience, education, and qualifications.

Job Type: Full time hourly (non-exempt), 40 hours/week, Biweekly Payroll.
