The Staff Accountant is responsible for supporting day-to-day accounting activities and maintaining accurate financial records across multiple business units. This position plays an important role in the monthly close process, account reconciliations, journal entries, financial reporting, and audit support.
The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, organized, and comfortable working across multiple entities and priorities. This role requires strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to collaborate effectively with both accounting professionals and operational teams.
Key Responsibilities
General Accounting
- Maintain accurate general ledger activity and supporting documentation across assigned entities.
- Perform recurring bank, balance sheet, and other account reconciliations and investigate variances as needed.
- Prepare and record month-end journal entries, including accruals, prepaid expenses, depreciation, interest, compensation-related items, and other recurring adjustments.
- Review account activity for unusual or inconsistent transactions and coordinate with business partners to resolve discrepancies.
- Maintain complete and well-organized accounting workpapers to support financial reporting and review processes.
Month-End Close
- Participate in the monthly close process and ensure assigned activities are completed accurately and within established deadlines.
- Maintain close schedules and monitor outstanding items throughout the reporting cycle.
- Analyze account balances and activity to identify potential errors or issues before financial results are finalized.
- Coordinate with operational and administrative teams to obtain information needed to complete the close.
- Assist with the preparation of monthly and quarterly financial reporting packages.
- Compile financial information and supporting schedules for management review.
- Perform account analysis and provide explanations for significant fluctuations or variances.
- Ensure reporting information is supported by accurate reconciliations and appropriate documentation.
Audit & Compliance Support
- Prepare account reconciliations, schedules, and other documentation requested during internal and external audits.
- Respond to routine auditor inquiries and coordinate with appropriate internal stakeholders to obtain supporting information.
- Assist in maintaining compliance with accounting policies, procedures, and applicable accounting standards.
- Support initiatives designed to strengthen financial controls and reporting accuracy.
Cross-Functional Partnership
- Work closely with accounting leadership and business unit personnel to resolve accounting questions and transactional issues.
- Provide guidance to operational teams regarding accounting procedures and established policies.
- Help promote consistency in accounting practices across multiple entities and locations.
- Develop effective working relationships with internal stakeholders to improve communication and financial processes.
Process Improvement
- Identify opportunities to simplify, standardize, and automate accounting activities.
- Participate in projects focused on improving close procedures, reconciliations, reporting, and financial systems.
- Recommend process enhancements that improve efficiency, accuracy, and control.
- Assist with special accounting projects and other initiatives as assigned.
