Job summary

PERI is seeking a Staff Accountant in Elkridge, MD to support the preparation of financial statements, close processes, and balance sheet reconciliations. You will partner with internal departments to ensure accurate controls and reporting, and assist with year-end audits and sales tax compliance.

The role requires 2–5 years of accounting experience, strong Excel skills, and GAAP knowledge. SAP proficiency is preferred, with opportunities to contribute to process improvements.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or related field.
  • 2–5 years of accounting experience focusing on financial reporting, reconciliations, and/or sales tax compliance.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and other financial reporting tools.
  • Strong GAAP knowledge and experience preparing financial statements.
  • SAP proficiency preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with month-end and year-end close processes, including journal entries, reconciliations, and adjustments.
  • Perform reconciliations for key balance sheet accounts (cash, accounts receivable, fixed assets, and accounts payable).
  • Collaborate with procurement, order management, and finance to ensure proper controls and reporting.
  • Prepare detailed reconciliations of general ledger accounts monthly; investigate discrepancies.
  • Reconcile inventory transactions and balances monthly; verify inventory reporting.
  • Review and post employee travel and expense reports in Concur, ensuring policy compliance.
  • Perform cash reconciliations by reviewing bank statements and resolving variances.
  • Analyze costs, review variances, and identify trends.
  • Support senior accounting with reports, ad-hoc analyses, and financial projects.
  • Participate in ad-hoc accounting and process-improvement projects.

Job description

The main purpose of the Staff Accountant (STAFFACT) is to support the preparation of financial statements, perform balance sheet reconciliation, and assist with the month‑end and year‑end close processes. The STAFFACT role does this by partnering with internal departments to ensure accurate financial controls and proper financial reporting are established. Leveraging PERI’s resources, the STAFFACT provides support for sales tax compliance and assistance with the year‑end audit. In addition, it is the responsibility of the STAFFACT to be proficient in SAP, such as journal entry, financial recording, and reporting.

What You’ll Do On a Typical Day
  • Assist with month‑end and year‑end close processes, including journal entries, account reconciliations, and adjustments.
  • Perform reconciliations for key balance sheet accounts, such as cash, accounts receivable, fixed assets, and accounts payable.
  • Collaborate with internal departments, including procurement, order management, and finance, to ensure proper financial controls and reporting.
  • Perform detailed reconciliations of general ledger accounts monthly to ensure accuracy and completeness of financial data. Investigate discrepancies and work to resolve issues.
  • Reconcile inventory transactions and balances monthly. Review and verify inventory additions, adjustments, and transfers to ensure accurate reporting in the financial statements.
  • Review, reconcile, and post employee travel and expense reports submitted through Concur, ensuring compliance with company policies and proper documentation for each transaction.
  • Perform cash reconciliations by reviewing bank statements and ensuring that all cash transactions are accurately reflected in the accounting records. Investigate any variances and resolve any discrepancies.
  • Assist in analyzing costs, reviewing variances, and identifying trends.
  • Provide ongoing assistance to senior accounting personnel by preparing necessary reports, performing ad‑hoc analyses, and supporting various financial projects. Help ensure timely and accurate financial reporting.
  • Participate in various ad‑hoc accounting and financial analysis projects, including process improvements.
What You’ll Need To Be Successful
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or related field.
  • 2‑5 years of accounting experience, with a focus on financial reporting, reconciliations, and/or sales tax compliance.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and other financial reporting tools.
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP and experience in preparing financial statements.
  • Proficiency in SAP is preferred.
  • Analytical skills: Accurately gathers data, analyzes information, uncovers hidden insights, and reaches sound decisions based on informed judgment.
  • Communication skills: Effectively relays oral and written information to individuals at all levels, ensuring clarity and understanding from all parties.
