Job Description

The Lead Cook provides leadership and work direction to department team members, including:

  1. Organizing and assigning work
  2. Prioritizing workload and assignments to ensure efficient completion
  3. Directing team members in completing their tasks successfully
  4. Enforcing department and company rules
  5. Training staff to perform their duties effectively
  6. Other leadership duties as assigned by supervision

Note: Lead Cooks do not handle scheduling, discipline, performance reviews, hiring, or terminations but may provide input.

Additional responsibilities include:

  • Delivering excellent guest service in line with the Boyd Gaming Way, maintaining a friendly and approachable demeanor, and being responsive to guest needs.
  • Familiarity with all Boyd Gaming outlets and functions to answer general questions.
  • Anticipating guest needs and responding promptly.
  • Reading food orders and preparing food according to menu plans.
  • Preparing foods by washing, slicing, peeling, or cutting.
  • Testing foods for doneness using tasting, smelling, or piercing.
  • Ensuring work procedures, quality standards, and menu specifications are followed.
  • Maintaining appropriate staffing levels based on business volume.
  • Engaging with guests at the buffet line, explaining products, and building relationships.
  • Coordinating with dining staff on orders.
  • Assuming limited charge of the kitchen during shifts.
  • Receiving and delivering food to designated areas.
  • Coaching and directing kitchen staff for efficiency.
  • Expediting food orders promptly.
  • Maintaining sanitation and safety standards.
  • Participating in training and completing assigned duties.
  • Maintaining a professional appearance and demeanor.
  • Handling difficult guests with resilience and working harmoniously with coworkers.
  • Following Standard Operating Procedures to ensure consistency.
  • Performing additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Experience in preparing a variety of foods in a high-volume, fast-paced environment.
  • Knowledge of sanitation procedures.

Typically, these skills are acquired through at least three years of related experience.
