Responsibilities

• Performs skilled work on traffic signal control equipment including CCTV PTZ cameras, detection cameras, and controllers.
• Underground locating of traffic, electric, and fiber facilities as UNCC Tier 1 member.
• Monitors performance of traffic devices using Centracs software.
• Designs, fabricates, installs, and maintains traffic signs and pavement markings per MUTCD guidelines.
• Maintains road markings and operates striping equipment for lane and bicycle markings.
• Performs maintenance on solar and wired signals and diagnoses signal malfunctions.
• Assists with special projects and city projects including temporary signage and traffic control.

The City of Littleton is seeking an experienced Senior Traffic Technician to join our Public Works & Utilities Department. This is an exciting opportunity for a skilled traffic professional who enjoys working outdoors, troubleshooting complex systems, and taking on a diverse range of projects that directly improve the safety and mobility of our community.

As a Senior Traffic Technician, you will play a key role in the operation, maintenance, and advancement of the city’s transportation infrastructure. ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

• Performs skilled work in the construction, installation, and maintenance of traffic signal control equipment. Equipment includes but is not limited to:
  • A variety of CCTV PTZ (pan/tilt/zoom)and detection cameras
  • Traffic cabinets
  • Traffic controllers and MMUs (multifunction monitoring units)
  • Traffic signal heads, pedestrian heads, and pedestrian buttons
  • Traffic network switches and devices
  • Wireless spread spectrum network radios
  • Lighting equipment including luminaire street/overhead lighting, school flasher beacons, school zone safety flashers, and pedestrian push button activated systems
• Performs technical underground locating of traffic, electric, and fiber facilities as a Tier 1 member of the Utility Notification Center of Colorado (UNCC).
• Monitors performance of traffic devices utilizing features of computerized master control software (Econolite Centracs).
• Installs and maintains fiber optic communications cables and wireless communications equipment.
• Designs, fabricates, installs, and maintains signs including traffic signs, electronic speed limit signs, signposts, temporary special event signage, and other city signs using computer-aided design software, plotter, and pressure sensitive sheeting according to regulations and specifications contained in the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD).
• Responsible for layout and installation of crosswalk markings, lane markings, and symbols using thermoplastic, paint, and tape.
• Ability to construct and maintain solar and hard-wired signals, including diagnosing traffic signal malfunctions, NEMA cabinet issues, and completing minor wiring changes, as necessary, inside the traffic signal cabinet, and the UPS battery backup system. Ability to diagnose and repair multiple vehicle detection types including loops, cameras, and radar.
• Ability to layout road markings and operate street striping equipment to apply paint that serves as markings for traffic lane separation, turn lane pockets and bicycle lanes, and operates and performs regular maintenance on paint truck.
• Willingness to learn and apply MUTCD standards for signing, signals, and all traffic control.
• Assists with special projects including quarterly traffic signal surveys, vehicle counts using a variety of counters, and other traffic duties as required, such as: clearing visual obstructions surrounding traffic signs; tree trimming; pilot project and quick build installations of safety equipment, installation and setup of variable message boards, and traffic control assistance on city projects.
• Street maintenance and snow removal activities include, but are not limited to, operating a utility or single or tandem axle dump truck to plow snow, applying sand and salt to roadways, and hauling materials and supplies.
• Responsible for entering work and updating assets in city’s asset management system (Cartegraph).
• Performs operator's maintenance daily, or as otherwise required, for all assigned vehicles and equipment.
• Performs other similar assignments and projects, as required.
• May serve as an Emergency Worker.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• High school diploma or equivalent; and
• Five (5) years of experience with installingand maintaining traffic signals, signs, and pavement markings, or working in roadways/traffic control; or
• An equivalent combination of education, training and work experience that produces the knowledge, skill, and ability to perform the essential duties and responsibilities of the position may be considered.

• Knowledge of principles and practices of hand and power tool operation and the skill and ability to apply that knowledge to perform the essential functions of the position.
• Sign manufacturing experience.
• Electrical experience not required but a positive skill to possess.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES

• Requires the ability to work in adverse weather conditions.
• Outdoor work activities include exposure to dusts, vehicle fumes, and exhausts; occasional exposure to mists, gases, poor ventilation; equipment vibration; vehicle and equipment noise occasionally reaching 125 decibels of unprotected noise exposure (the use of hearing protection devices to reduce noise exposure to permissible OSHA levels is mandatory); exposure to mechanical and electrical hazards; working on high, exposed worksites; exposure to radiant energy and burn hazards; exposure to toxic and caustic chemicals; exposure to paints, thinners, epoxy compounds, and glues.The wearing of protective gloves and eye safety goggles is mandatory while operating equipment or performing job duties that present eye and hand injury hazards.
• Other physical activities include lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling objects weighing up to 75 pounds with or without assistance.

MATERIAL AND EQUIPMENT DIRECTLY USED

• Traffic bucket truck, pick-up truck, single and tandem axle dump trucks, including those with lifts or snowplows, street striping truck, front end loader, forklift, and skid steer.
• Machinery including walk-behind line striper, propane torches, power saws, drills, concrete saw, gas powered post hole drivers, air compressor, jackhammer, scarifier, core drill, oxyacetylene torch, pressure washer, and related power tools.
• Two-way vehicle radio, telephone, hand tools, manual post hole drivers, hand pushed rollers, and personal computer.
