Job summary

Life Fitness / Hammer Strength, based in Rosemont, IL, seeks a Senior Trade Compliance Specialist to lead cross-functional initiatives, determine HTS/ECCN classifications, and drive policy in a dynamic regulatory environment. The role focuses on CBP coordination, USMCA qualifications, and optimizing the duty drawback program.

The candidate will manage brokers, maintain records, monitor trade rules, and educate teams through training and SOPs. A CPA?

Qualifications

  • Licensed Customs Broker (LCB) certification required.
  • Certified Customs Specialist (CCS) designation preferred.
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • 5–7 years of trade or customs compliance experience with demonstrated ownership of determinations and audit responses.
  • Experience leading cross-functional projects and driving process improvements is strongly preferred.
  • Working knowledge of 19 CFR, HTSUS, the FTR, EAR, OFAC sanctions programs.
  • Advanced Excel skills and ability to analyze large data sets; Oracle ERP experience preferred.
  • Direct experience preparing duty drawback claims and qualifying goods under USMCA preferred.
  • Strong communication with auditors, CBP, brokers, and senior leadership.

Responsibilities

  • Lead cross‑functional trade compliance initiatives involving Procurement, Operations, Engineering, Supply Chain, Finance, and Legal to improve processes and reduce risk.
  • Make HTS / Schedule B and ECCN determinations, document rationale, and prepare binding ruling requests with CBP when classification is ambiguous.
  • Qualify goods under USMCA and other FTAs, issue certifications, and own annual country of origin and FTA solicitation project.
  • Serve as the classification and origin authority for EU, UK, and other regional brokers.
  • Analyze BOM data to support FTA qualification and manufacturing drawback.
  • Adjudicate denied party screening results, investigate potential matches, document disposition, and escalate to legal when warranted.
  • Lead responses to CBP inquiries, post summary corrections, protests, and Focused Assessments; act as primary contact with CBP and brokers.
  • Own broker management, including issuing broker instructions, auditing broker and AES filing accuracy, and reconciling discrepancies.
  • Own the duty drawback program, preparing and reviewing claims, setting filing strategy, maximizing recovery.
  • Maintain a compliant, audit-ready record retention system meeting government requirements.
  • Identify duty savings and risk mitigation opportunities, including FTA utilization and tariff engineering inputs.
  • Develop business cases and plans to realize opportunities from concept through execution.
  • Monitor regulatory changes and communicate business impact.
  • Design and deliver import/export compliance training and write SOPs.

  • Identify and pursue duty savings and risk mitigation opportunities, including FTA utilization, duty deferral, valuation, and tariff engineering inputs.
  • Develop business cases, implementation plans, and stakeholder alignment strategies to successfully execute opportunities from concept through realization.
  • Monitor regulatory changes across CBP, BIS, OFAC, and Census / FTR, and assess and communicate business impact.
  • Design and deliver the import and export compliance training program.
  • Write and maintain standard operating procedures and relevant sections of the compliance manual.
  • Lead trade compliance projects and process improvements, and review the work of and mentor junior analysts.
  • Manage project timelines, stakeholder communications, and implementation activities to ensure successful delivery of strategic trade compliance initiatives.
  • Prepare and present monthly trade compliance metrics and program reporting to leadership.
  • Monitor evolving global trade regulations, tariff actions, forced labor requirements, sanctions programs, and emerging compliance risks, evaluating business impact and recommending proactive mitigation strategies.
  • Other projects and responsibilities as assigned.
Qualifications

  • Demonstrated knowledge of the current global trade environment, including Section 232 and Section 301 tariffs, UFLPA / forced labor requirements, sanctions and embargo programs, duty drawback, customs valuation, and Free Trade Agreements.
  • Strong project management skills with the ability to independently lead initiatives, coordinate stakeholders, manage timelines, and deliver measurable business outcomes.
  • Experience partnering cross‑functionally with Procurement, Engineering, Operations, Supply Chain, Finance, and/or Legal teams.
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret complex regulations, develop policies and procedures, and translate regulatory requirements into practical business processes.
  • Proven ability to work autonomously and exercise judgment on complex, ambiguous issues.
  • Advanced Excel skills and the ability to analyze large data sets; experience with an ERP (Oracle) preferred.
  • Direct experience preparing duty drawback claims and qualifying goods under USMCA preferred.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to interface with auditors, CBP, brokers, and senior leadership.
Location & Work Arrangement

This is a hybrid position based out of our Global Support Center in Rosemont, IL. M/F remote and T‑Th are in‑office collaboration days.

Salary and Incentives

The salary range for this position, intended for U.S. applicants, is $81,000 - $117,400 annually.

This position is eligible to participate in Life Fitness / Hammer Strength’s annual Manager Incentive Plan to receive an annual discretionary bonus in addition to base salary. The amount of bonus varies based on company and individual performance goals and is subject to the terms and conditions of the applicable incentive plan.
