Job summary

Merck & Co. in Durham, NC is seeking a Senior Maintenance Technician to install, repair, and maintain mechanical equipment in aseptic and clean-room environments.

You will support VMF Operations areas, perform preventive and predictive maintenance, document activities in SAP, and troubleshoot complex production issues. The role requires at least four years of equipment maintenance experience, familiarity with clean utility systems and DeltaV control, and a strong safety mindset.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Technical/associate degree preferred.
  • Minimum four years of equipment maintenance experience.
  • Experience with clean utility systems preferred.
  • Thorough knowledge of DeltaV control and computer fluency.

Responsibilities

  • Must install, repair, and maintain mechanical equipment across manufacturing environments including sterile and GMP settings.
  • Perform preventive and predictive maintenance; document work in SAP and other systems.
  • Support automation, validation, and testing as needed.
  • Read P&ID’s, electrical drawings, and blueprints; follow cGMP and safety procedures.
  • Participate in on‑call schedule and multi‑shift coverage.

The Senior Maintenance Technician provides equipment troubleshooting and maintenance support to VMF Operations areas (sterile supply, weigh/dispense, media, stabilizer/prep, thaw/pool, filling, capping/inspection, clean utilities, etc.) located in aseptic and clean‑room environments. The technician works within a team, performs maintenance and troubleshooting activities, completes complex maintenance tasks, resolves deviations, evaluates equipment performance, follows proper procedures for maintaining production equipment in a clean‑room environment, and is responsible for written documentation of activities. This is a Monday – Friday Day shift position
Key Responsibilities

Must have knowledge installing, repairing, and maintaining mechanical‑related equipment throughout a manufacturing environment, including:

  • Utility equipment (Clean steam generators, Water‑For‑Injection generators/distribution, reverse osmosis skids, vapor compression stills, compressed gas systems)
  • GMP‑production related equipment (Autoclaves, Fillers, Lyophilizers, Cappers and Automated Inspection Machines)
  • The ability to satisfactorily perform all types of industrial mechanical work as assigned.
  • Anticipates and solves complex production, maintenance, and operational problems, including off‑shift and after‑hours support.
  • Strong sponsor for problem‑solving efforts and solutions offered by other shifts and teams.
Additional Responsibilities
  • The ability to perform predictive maintenance and reliability tasks as assigned.
  • Outstanding communication skills to ensure that all shifts of the assigned team are informed and working at optimum efficiency.
  • Identifies opportunities and implements projects that improve the business by streamlining work.
  • Maintains process equipment by performing preventive maintenance, installing new equipment, documenting work using SAP and other mandated systems.
  • Routinely provides technical guidance and maintenance/process training to others.
  • Participates in new equipment/replacement installations, interfaces with vendors, recommends spare parts, selects lubrication processes, and assists process project engineers.
  • Assists with execution of automation, validation, and additional testing as required.
  • Follows instructions for completion of job tasks and completes written documentation.
  • Ensures safe maintenance and repair of equipment using Hazardous Energy Control Procedures (HECPs).
  • Compliance with current good manufacturing procedures (cGMP), safety and environmental requirements/regulations/guidelines.
  • Reads P&ID’s, electrical drawings, blueprints, etc.
  • Physical requirements: must lift 50 lbs, climb ladders and stairs, work on platforms and equipment above floor level; walking, bending, crawling, stooping required.
  • Must wear personal protective equipment: safety glasses, earplugs, gloves, hard hats, safety harnesses, etc., and use aseptic gowning during performance of duties.
  • Must be willing for vaccination/blood testing for titer for products manufactured within the facility if needed.
  • Supports an on‑call schedule including days, nights, and weekends on a rotational basis with other team members.
  • Manages multiple priorities and advances several tasks in parallel.
  • Demonstrated mechanical aptitude; proficient in general hand and power tools, instruments, and testing apparatus common to electronic, mechanical, and instrumentation fields.
Educational Qualification
Required
  • High School Diploma or GED.
Preferred
  • Technical School Diploma or Associate Degree.
Experience and Skills
Required
  • A minimum of four (4) years of equipment maintenance or related experience.
  • Experience working on Clean Utility systems.
  • Computer fluency, including thorough knowledge of DeltaV.
Preferred
  • Experience working in a clean‑room or GMP/regulated manufacturing environment.
Salary Range

$77,700 – $122,300.

The position offers a comprehensive package of benefits, including medical, dental, vision, retirement (401(k)), paid holidays, vacation, and compassionate and sick days. Successful candidates may be eligible for annual bonus and long‑term incentive, if applicable.
