Job summary

Gener8 seeks a Sr. Systems Engineer to lead cross-functional teams in designing instruments that integrate optics, mechanics, electronics and software.

You will develop architectures balancing performance, reliability, and cost while guiding experiments to validate concepts and ensure interfaces meet customer needs. The role requires independent development with collaboration across engineering disciplines, regular customer reporting, and in-office presence at Gener8’s Boston-area offices.

Qualifications

• Master’s degree or PhD in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering or the Physical Sciences
• Minimum of 5 years of work experience
• Excellent written and oral communication skills
• Experience with developing instrumentation
• Familiarity with optics and cleanroom practices a big plus
• Expertise with standard laboratory equipment (oscilloscopes, DMMs, spectrum analyzers, power meters, microscopes, motion stages)
• Ability to assemble and test electro-mechanical products
• Hands-on experience with CAD tools
• Skilled at developing test automation software (LabVIEW, MATLAB)
• Experience with data analysis tools (JMP)
• Computer-proficient with MS Office
• Self-starter and ability to manage multiple projects
• Strong organizational skills

Responsibilities

• Provide systems leadership to cross functional engineering teams, including design, quality and reliability
• Develop systems architecture, prototypes, analyze and design mechanical assemblies
• Advise management on technical direction for product development
• Collaborate with customers on technical details and project deliverables
• Develop project plans to satisfy milestones and deadlines with required actions
• Develop test and assembly stations
• Participate in building and testing of small-quantity, pre-production products
• Manage vendors
• Support Development and Manufacturing with test setup design, troubleshooting and procurement
• Lead technical personnel and material resources to achieve project goals

The successful candidate would be responsible for developing new products compromising optics, mechanics, electronics and software. He/she would apply systems expertise to influence and develop architectures balancing performance, reliability and cost within the available time and budget constraints. The candidate will design experiments and carry them out to validate concepts, verify designs, and demonstrate reliability. The successful candidate must be confident and capable of independent development with minimal guidance while collaborating with other team members. He/she is expected to provide technical and programmatic leadership to drive projects forward. The candidate must be confident in providing oral and written reports to customers and management.

Position is at Gener8’s Boston office. Minimum a 3-day/week in-office presence is required.
