Job summary

Arup is seeking a Senior Substation Designer to drive high‑voltage substation design for power utilities, renewables interconnections, and data centers. You will deliver designs from concept through completion for utilities, contractors and developers, while mentoring junior staff and ensuring cross‑discipline coordination.

This role requires deep HV knowledge (15kV‑345kV), strong AutoCAD/MicroStation skills, and familiarity with BIM tools such as Inventor, SDS‑P4A, and Primtech.

Qualifications

• Associate degree in technology or related field with at least 6 years of related experience.
• Proven experience in 15kV through 345kV utility substation design and IEEE/ANSI standards.
• Advanced proficiency in AutoCAD and MicroStation.
• Experience in BIM software such as Inventor, SDS‑P4A, Primtech is preferred.
• Working knowledge of Microsoft Office tools (Word, Excel, Outlook).

Responsibilities

• Prepare 3D models and 2D drawings of HV substations including single-line diagrams and layouts.
• Lead, coach and mentor junior designers and CAD technicians.
• Coordinate with other disciplines to develop a fully coordinated design.
• Incorporate feedback from engineers into design packages.
• Interpret and apply design codes and client specifications.
• Follow company, client and project drafting standards.
• Manage revisions of drawings and models and keep project information organized.

We are seeking a Senior Substation Designer with technical experience in the design of HV substations for power utilities and for the interconnection of renewables and data centers. In this role you will support the delivery of substation design projects from the conceptual phase through design completion for electric utilities, contractors and developers.

West coast (San Francisco, Los Angeles, San Diego, Seattle) or South (Houston, Dallas or Austin) offices.

The opportunity

• Prepare 3D models and 2D drawings of HV substations including: single‑line diagrams, substation physical layouts, conduit and cable plans and details, grounding grid plan and details, lightning protection and yard lighting plans, and bills of materials.
• Lead, coach and mentor junior designers and CAD technicians to deliver substation design projects.
• Coordinate with other disciplines to develop a fully coordinated design.
• Work with engineers and incorporate feedback into design package.
• Interpret and incorporate design codes and client specifications related to design requirements.
• Follow all company, client and project design and drafting standards.
• Execute changes to designs or sketches and redlines or mark‑ups to project deliverables.
• Organize and maintain all revisions of project drawings, models, and ensure all project‑related information is stored in a logical and well‑structural manner.

Is this role right for you?

• Associate Degree in technology or related discipline and atleast 6 years of related experience.
• Proven experience in 15kV through 345kV physical utility substation design and IEEE/ANSI standards.
• Advanced understanding of design software such as: AutoCAD and MicroStation.
• Experience in performing substation design in BIM software (Inventor, SDS‑P4A, Primtech) is preferred.
• Ability to learn and effectively utilize new design software programs.
• Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Tools – MS Word, MS Excel, Outlook.

Houston Hiring Range - The good faith base salary hiring range for this job if performed in Houston is $112,500 - $136,500 per year. This range is commensurate with experience, educational background, and skill level. Benefits are not included in the base salary. Please note hiring ranges for candidates performing work outside of Houston will differ.
