Job summary

Venmo is seeking a senior backend engineer to help scale our payments platform. You will drive architecture decisions, design robust services, and mentor engineers across teams in a hybrid PayPal Venmo environment.

You’ll work with AWS, Terraform, Redis and Kafka, shaping solutions for high-availability, low-latency systems while collaborating with product and operations teams to meet business goals.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s or higher in computer science or related field, or equivalent experience.
• 10+ years’ experience with Python and distributed backend services.
• Experience leading cross-team projects and mentoring engineers.

Minimum Qualifications

• 8+ years relevant experience and a Bachelor’s degree OR Any equivalent combination of education and experience.

Additional Responsibilities & Preferred Qualifications

• Master's in computer science, or a related field of study, or equivalent experience
• 10+ years’ experience with Python or equivalent high-level programming language
• Advanced skills with RDBMS and NoSQL data stores, caching solutions (e.g. Redis, ElastiCache, Hazelcast) and messaging/queuing protocols/systems such as SQS/Kafka/RabbitMQ/Pulsar
• Ability to lead projects and mentor all levels of engineering staff, along with managing relationships with Product, Engineering Operations and non-technical business and support teams
• Expert with distributed services and backend systems
• Expertise with building services on public cloud - preferably AWS
• Experience in managing infrastructure as code using Terraform
• Experience working with fault-tolerant and scalable distributed services and systems.

Additional compensation for this role may include an annual performance bonus, equity, or other incentive compensation, as applicable.
