Job description

This opening is within the Small Commercial National Technical Underwriting unit. It can be filled in a remote/work-from-home (WFH) capacity or in one of our offices.

Anticipated key responsibilities include:

  1. Partnering with Technical Consultants and Directors on project execution, providing coordination, documentation, and administrative support.
  2. Collaborating with the Automation Team to ensure project alignment and leveraging data analytics tools.
  3. Assisting with the management of Knowledge Advanced and supporting the transition to the P&C Knowledge Center.
  4. Supporting the maintenance of Handling Procedure documentation and promoting digital workflow integration.
  5. Contributing to underwriter development by sharing insights and best practices.
  6. Supporting external-facing appetite initiatives, including updates to platforms like Ask Kodiak and the Commercial Appetite Directory.

Candidates should possess core skills such as:

  • Deep knowledge of commercial underwriting principles.
  • Experience with PolicyCenter.
  • Understanding of regulatory requirements and creation of underwriting guidelines.
  • Project management skills.
  • Creative problem-solving and innovation skills.
  • Strategic foresight and industry trend awareness.
  • Effective communication skills.
  • Professionalism and integrity.
  • Data proficiency with Power BI and PowerApps.
  • Resiliency and agility in shifting priorities.

This role does not qualify for employer-sponsored work authorization and Nationwide does not participate in the Stem OPT Extension program.

Job Description Summary

Developing underwriting strategy and ensuring alignment with risk appetite is essential. The team uses analysis and problem-solving to enable efficient underwriting and streamlined processes. We seek creative, strategic, and communicative professionals.

As a Senior Specialist, you will conduct research, contribute to policy development, and support product growth and profitability, coordinating efforts between the home office and field operations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Serve as product/underwriting staff specialist for assigned products and operational areas.
  • Assist in interpreting coverage, rules, and acceptance standards.
  • Assess underwriting problems and participate in risk standard development.
  • Conduct performance reviews and recommend remedial actions.
  • Analyze market information and recommend improvements.
  • Participate in state filings and project management for rate reviews.

Other responsibilities may be assigned. The position reports to a Staff Officer/Director.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • Relevant professional designation such as CPCU is helpful.
  • Typically six years of product-related underwriting experience.
  • Knowledge of property/casualty products and insurance operations.
  • Decision-making and analysis skills.
  • Ability to lead projects and connect with leadership.

Additional criteria may include leadership skills and competencies. Staffing exceptions require approval.

  • Overtime: Not eligible (Exempt).
  • Normal office environment; occasional travel.
