State Street is seeking a Software Engineer to join the API Engineering team. You will design, develop, test, document, and support REST APIs powering vital business applications and partner integrations.

You will collaborate with architects, PMs, QEs, and platform teams to deliver secure, scalable APIs using modern engineering practices. Backend focus with microservices and cloud-native patterns.

Qualifications

• Education: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, or related field.
• Experience: 3+ years of professional software development; 2+ years building REST APIs.
• Technical: REST, HTTP, API security (OAuth 2.0, JWT), Java/C#/.NET, Spring Boot, Azure, Kubernetes, CI/CD.

About the Role

We are seeking a motivated and skilled Software Engineer to join our API Engineering team. In this role, you will design, develop, test, document, and support REST APIs that power critical business applications, partner integrations, and client-facing services.

You will work closely with architects, product managers, quality engineers, and platform teams to build secure, scalable, and reliable APIs using modern software engineering practices. This position is ideal for an engineer who enjoys backend development, systems integration, API design, and solving complex technical challenges.

Key Responsibilities

API Development

• Design, develop, and maintain RESTful APIs and backend services.

• Build reusable components, libraries, and integration services.

• Ensure APIs meet performance, scalability, reliability, and security requirements.

• Participate in API versioning, lifecycle management, and backward compatibility planning.

• Troubleshoot and resolve API and integration issues across development, testing, and production environments.

Documentation & Knowledge Sharing

• Create and maintain comprehensive API and integration documentation, including API specifications, developer guides, authentication and authorization requirements, onboarding materials, operational procedures, troubleshooting guides, and usage examples for internal and external consumers.

• Document system designs, technical decisions, and implementation approaches.

• Contribute to knowledge repositories and engineering best practices.

Integration & Architecture

• Develop integrations between internal systems, external partners, and cloud services.

• Implement API solutions that align with enterprise architecture standards.

• Contribute to microservices and event-driven integration patterns.

• Support API gateway onboarding and policy implementation activities.

• Assist with API modernization and legacy system integration initiatives.

Quality Engineering

• Develop unit, integration, and automated API tests.

• Participate in peer code reviews and design reviews.

• Support CI/CD adoption and deployment automation.

• Identify and address reliability, performance, and maintainability issues.

Security & Compliance

• Implement secure authentication and authorization mechanisms using OAuth 2.0, JWT, and related standards.

• Follow secure coding practices and enterprise security requirements.

• Support vulnerability remediation and compliance initiatives.

• Ensure appropriate logging, monitoring, and auditing capabilities are implemented.

Collaboration

• Participate in Agile/Scrum ceremonies and engineering planning activities.

• Collaborate with product, architecture, security, operations, and support teams.

• Communicate technical solutions effectively to technical and non-technical stakeholders.

• Contribute to continuous improvement of engineering standards and processes.

Required Qualifications

Education

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.

Experience

• 3+ years of professional software development experience.

• 2+ years of experience developing and supporting REST APIs.

• Experience building backend services using Java, C#, .NET, Spring Boot, or similar technologies.

• Experience working with distributed applications and service integrations.

• Experience using Git-based source control and CI/CD platforms.

Technical Skills

• Strong understanding of REST API principles and HTTP protocols.

• Experience designing and implementing RESTful services and integrations.

• Experience with JSON, XML, and API integration patterns.

• Experience with relational databases and SQL.

• Knowledge of software design patterns and object‑oriented programming.

• Familiarity with API security concepts and best practices including OAuth 2.0 and JWT.

• Experience with automated testing frameworks and API testing tools.

• Hands‑on experience developing and deploying applications on Microsoft Azure.

• Experience with Kubernetes and containerized applications using Docker or similar technologies.

• Understanding of cloud‑native application development, deployment scaling, and operational best practices.

• Experience with CI/CD pipelines and DevOps practices.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with Azure API Management (APIM).

• Experience with event‑driven architectures and messaging platforms such as Azure Service Bus, Event Hubs, Kafka, or RabbitMQ.

• Experience producing API and technical documentation.

• Experience with monitoring and observability tools such as Azure Monitor, Application Insights, Splunk, Prometheus, Grafana, or OpenTelemetry.

• Familiarity with Infrastructure as Code tools such as Terraform, Bicep, or ARM templates.

• Experience in financial services, fintech, or other regulated industries.

Salary Range:

$90,000 - $157,500 Annual

The range quoted above applies to the role in the primary location specified. If the candidate would ultimately work outside of the primary location above, the applicable range could differ.
